Page 8 of It Has To Be You

“I’ve tried to make an appointment for weeks, but Nick is set on avoiding me.” He stepped closer. “You wouldn’t know anything about that, would you?”

It had been a long time since anyone except Sasha entered her personal space, and even longer since Indy had wanted them to. Ethan was… startlingly real, in a way she’d forgotten strangers could be.

Indy had no idea what her face was doing, but on the inside, there were fireworks.

“Hey, so I just heard from Nick— oh.” Lindsey appeared just in time, drawing Ethan’s attention away from Indy. “I didn’t mean to interrupt.”

Apparently, the sly look from earlier wasn’t confined to Nick-related innuendo, since Lindsey was now eyeing Ethan with the same glint in her eye.

And suddenly, Indy saw her opportunity.Riley would be so proud.

“Ask Lindsey,” she said. “She’ll tell you. I’m Nick’s girlfriend.”

Ethan’s reaction was immediate. He spun back to her, his jaw tight and his eyes hard. “No, you’re not.”

Indy’s pulse raced. “Excuse me?”

Lindsey backed out of the room. “I’ll just leave you two alone.”

This was it, wasn’t it?

He knew. She’d taken a risk and stepped in it. Foot, meet mouth.

Might as well confess—

“He might say you are, but trust me, he doesn’t mean it.”

Indy tried not to let her relief show, but on the inside, her heart dropped back into her chest from where it had been lodged in her throat.

“How would you know?” She planted her hands on her hips and narrowed her eyes. “You haven’t seen him in weeks.”

“I can promise you I know him better than you do. Did he even tell you what happened?”

She was mad now. Who was this jerk?

He huffed a laugh. “I didn’t think so.” He stepped so close her senses were clouded by him. He smelled like soap and sunshine, and his infinite expanse of muscle made her lightheaded. “I’ve got to admit, I’m impressed. Nick’s type is usually more…”

“What?”

His eyes darkened, and Indy’s whole body reacted.

“You were looking for something just now,” he said, ignoring her question. “Did you find it?”

She’d found something, all right. The base model for every romantic hero of the last century. Tall, mysterious, and sexy had nothing on this guy.

She had to get out of this room before she threw herself at him.

Nick.She was here for Nick.

“No,” she said, proud of how confident she sounded. “I didn’t.”

“I don’t believe you.” His low voice rolled through her, and this time, she couldn’t hold back the shiver.

No one had ever looked at her this way, as though nothing else existed. It was an adrenaline rush.

Indy could barely breathe. She side-stepped Superman to get some room.

“How long have you and Nick been seeing each other?”
