“Not long.”

The line between writer and liar had never felt thinner.

“Do you always snoop around your boyfriends’ offices, or is Nick lucky?”

“Listen here, buddy. I don’t have to explain myself to you. You said yourself that Nick doesn’t want to see you. What I’m doing here is none of your business.”

Ethan dropped his gaze to her lips, his eyes flashing amber. For a moment, Indy thought he might kiss her, and she didn’t think she’d mind if he tried.

Lindsey’s voice floated through the open door. “Oh, Mr. Jackson, you’re back. There are a couple of people waiting for you in your office.”

Ethan was out of the door before Indy could blink. For a mountain, he moved pretty quickly.

Indy followed him in a rush. She had no idea what she was going to say, but awkwardly standing by his desk while Ethan outed her as being Nick’s girlfriend wasn’t her first choice.

“You coward,” came from reception.

When she emerged from the office, Ethan was staring at the closed elevator doors, his chest heaving and his hands fisted at his sides.

“Great,” he huffed, turning to Lindsey’s desk.

Well, that was her cue to leave.

She slunk past him, keeping a wide berth until she reached the elevators and pressed the button one, two, three times, willing it to arrive before he noticed her.

Thank god she hadn’t given anyone her name. At least if Lindsey told Nick this story later, he wouldn’t know it was her. Maybe she could tell him on their tenth anniversary. It would be a funny little footnote in their grand tale of kismet.

“Hey, Snoopy,” Ethan called out.

Indy expected him to be smiling when she turned to face him, but there was a distinctive crease between his brows.

“You deserve better than him.”

Indy huffed. “I’ll have you know that man is my destiny.”

Like a sign from the universe, the elevator opened, and she entered. Ethan was still watching her when she turned back.

“That’s a shame,” he said. “But it doesn’t change the fact that I’m right.”

Indy frowned as the doors closed.

ChapterFour

“Ifound something,” Indy confessed to Sasha a week later. The address scrolled through her mind day and night like breaking news on a news ticker, but she’d been too scared to use it.

She may have also had a couple of strange dreams involving his cousin, but no one had to know about those.

“Wait, really?”

Indy nodded. “I found an address when I was at his office. His apartment is on the north side of the city.” A brownstone near the state building, to be exact.

“Wow,” Sasha said, having typed the address into her phone. “Your boy’s doing all right for himself.” She handed the phone over, chewing her lip. “Indy, I don’t know. Do you really want to show up out of the blue?”

“Desperate times, Sash.” She couldn’t explain it, but a driving force was pushing her, and she wasn’t about to do something silly like turn away Fate.

“You can’t just show up at his apartment with a gift he gave you when you were kids. He’ll think you’re a stalker. What are you even going to say when he asks how you found him?”

But Indy wouldn’t be swayed. “I’ll tell him I know Ethan. It’s not exactly a lie.”
