“You can’t leave here without a guard. Did you take any guns, for fuck’s sake?”

I pull one side of my suit jacket back, revealing the gun hidden there. He nods, looking somewhat pacified.

“I had one lapse in judgment that night. It doesn’t mean that I don’t have a fucking brain,” I growl at him.

The tension between us is coming to a head soon. I can sense it with every interaction.

We’ve both been avoiding each other since I’ve been home. Our usual camaraderie has disappeared, and in its place, suppressed rage is simmering. Geo has a right to be angry with me, but he shouldn’t have let Wryn leave either. She’s my fucking wife, and he knew how dangerous it was to go to Chicago. He has no room to talk right now.

“I’m not questioning your IQ—”

“You shouldn’t be questioning me at all,” I say, stopping and spinning to face him.

His chest heaves with unspoken words, and I step closer to him.

“If you have something to say, Geo, say it. Because I have my own issues with you. We can do this right now.”

He doesn’t say anything for a moment, and then he seems to deflate.

“It doesn’t matter,” he says, shaking his head. “It’s not like we can change anything.”

“No, we can’t. I can’t go back and change that night and outing us, the same as you can’t go back and keep my fucking wife from offering herself up on a silver platter to Viktor fucking Leoni.”

The words hang in the air, and it’s only then that I realize we are in the main hallway, yelling at each other. No doubt others can hear us.

“Fucking hell,” I say, running a hand down my face.

“I couldn’t stop her,” Geo says. “I tried.”

“You should have tried harder.”

I know it’s unfair of me to expect that, but I was gone, and if I can’t rely on Geo, who can I rely on?

“Where did you go?”

“I met with Dahlia,” I say.

It takes him a moment, but then he realizes what I was doing.

“You are going to go through with it?” he asks.

I nod. “It’s the only way.”

He gives a quick jerk of his head. “Dahlia agreed?”

“She doesn’t know exactly what she agreed to, but yes.”

He lets out a deep breath. “So, it’s happening then?”

“If we can pull it off.”

Silence falls between us, and I wonder if maybe we shouldn’t still be standing in the hallway to discuss something of this magnitude. But I guess we didn’t really say anything that has meaning beyond Dahlia’s name. And if questioned, she would say I was planning a private party.

“Did you know Francesca is back?” Geo asks, and it’s my turn to heave a sigh. “Wryn’s got you by the balls, huh?”

“No,” I say, narrowing my eyes at him, and he chuckles. “I liked it better when we didn’t like each other.”

“I’m still mad at you,” he says, shaking his head. “But what the fuck are you going to do with one of Leoni’s women under your roof?”
