“She’s trying to survive. Viktor promised her freedom from her forced engagement if she spied for him.”

“And you turned her back over to him. Whose side are you even on, Wryn?” Connor sits up, yelling the last part.

I’m not sure I even know anymore. I’m on my side. I’m on Ruby’s side. Is that the same as Connor’s side? Maybe not. It doesn’t look like it if I’m willing to trade his information. But I believe in what I’m doing, and I don’t believe that Connor really wants the job of taking on all his father’s assets. I’m playing God for him in a sense.

“Mine. I’m on my side,” I say, yelling back.

“Is your side the same as mine?” he asks, much quieter this time.

“Yes,” I say, nodding, even though I’m not sure where we stand right now. “We both want to find Ruby.”

Connor’s face drops slightly when I say that, but he recovers quickly. Maybe it bothers him a lot more than he lets on.

“We both want a new life, one with your sister here, and freedom. One without Viktor hanging over our heads.”

“So, instead of letting me deal with a rat, you shipped her back to her master. It doesn’t look like you truly believe in what you are saying. That’s not how we get rid of Viktor. He will see us as weak, letting her go. He never would have done that.”

“And he is who you want to be like? You want to kill her in cold blood, like he would’ve?”

“You don’t fucking know what she took back with her! You don’t know what information she’s given to Viktor.”

“What information, Connor? What do you know that’s so important that you haven’t told me?”

The room goes silent. Connor stands from the bed and walks toward me. It’s a slow, measured walk, confident. Then, he’s standing right in front of me. The anger between us is thick. But it’s a lot like arousal as well. I want to reach out and touch him. I want to reach out and slap him. I don’t know what I want.

“What does Francesca know?” he asks lethally quiet.

It doesn’t escape my notice that he didn’t answer my question. I don’t know if it’s because he has something he doesn’t want to tell me or if he deemed it not important enough to answer.

“Nothing,” I say, wilting. “She tried to get into your office and couldn’t. She had no information to give Viktor.”

“So, you admit it then.”

“Admit what?” I ask.

He reaches up to rub my cheek with the pad of his thumb. “That you helped her leave.”

I lean into his touch. “I thought that much was obvious?”

“I wanted to hear it from your own lips,” he says, dipping down and placing his mouth by my cheek.

“I couldn’t leave her to be killed,” I say, my chest hitching at his proximity and how badly I wish he would wrap his hand around my waist and pull me to him.

“You think I would have killed her?”

“Wouldn’t you?” I ask.

Connor’s teeth graze the top of my ear. It sends a tingle through my core, centering between my legs, and I press them together involuntarily. I’m so screwed.

“I would make the punishment fit the crime,” he whispers, his breath blowing hot against my skin.

I reach up, fisting his shirt in my hands, and hold him to me. He moves down, dragging his teeth along my jawline.

“What punishment fits your crime?”

I still.

He keeps moving.
