“The wedding will take place in two months.”

“Two months?” I ask, shocked, my heart pounding in my chest. But they don’t look at me. They don’t hear me. They’re ignoring me, and it only proves to me more that I need to get out of here. Now.

I shuffle my chair back, and my brother’s eyes turn to mine.

“If you could excuse me for a second,” I say, putting one hand on my stomach to indicate something is wrong. Frederic nods his head before asking Thomas where it’ll take place. But I don’t bloody care about that. I just want to get out of here and forget this evening ever took place.

I step out of the room, closing the door softly. I raise both my hands to the door and flip them the bird before I sprint upstairs. I grab the first coat off the hanger and storm back downstairs with my blood pumping through my veins. It’s exhilarating to listen to my own voice. My own wishes.

I put on my white jean jacket and open the door. My eyes fall on my knight in shining armour, and I smile, trying to forget the conversation that took place a minute ago. I don’t want to think about that now. I want to smile, to laugh and to live.

“You,” I whisper, making sure they can’t catch me before I have a chance to escape. Chester points at himself before he mouths,Me, then looks left and right to see if someone else is nearby. I roll my eyes, wanting to hit him on the shoulder for playing dumb.

I’ve never felt this happy to see my neighbour. It makes my heart skip repeatedly, and I almost have the urge to grab him around the neck to hug him. It’s ridiculous how relieved I am from one little note.

I descend the few steps that lead to the pavement, still smiling at Chester, who can’t stop his smile either. But instead, he covers it by coughing slightly and scratching the back of his head.

“Miss Evangeline, where are you going?” My smile falls, and I look at Esther.

“Out. Please don’t tell Frederic,” I whisper at her. Frederic can’t know. I need to hide this at all costs, or else he’ll make life even worse.

Chester steps closer to me to watch over my shoulder. Esther’s eyes grow large before they move to the dining room holding my brother and my fiancé. I’m not the only one scared of the big bad wolf.

“Esther, just tell my brother that I have horrible period cramps. It makes men uncomfortable, especiallyFrederic.” Chester chuckles behind me, and it only brings back my smile. His chest touches my back and my heart flutters for a moment before I mouth to Esther that it’ll be fine. It needs to be fine. I close the door before I spin around, coming face-to-face with an amused-looking Chester.

His bright eyes sparkle, and his lips are smiling, teeth and all.

“Well done, princess,” he whispers with a certain pride in the tone of his voice.

“Thank you,” I whisper back, feeling my smile growing even larger as I forget about the two-month deadline. He grabs my hand before tugging me away from the door and turning right. His hand is large and warm, and I’m grateful for that because my body was freezing not even a minute ago.

“Where are we going?”

“Out.”

“Are we going to walk there?”

“Yes, princess,” Chester says, squeezing my hand once with his, and again, my heart is overjoyed from that small gesture.

“I’m wearing heels, and those are not meant for walking,” I say honestly, already worrying about how long I can last on them. A loud chuckle leaves him before he eyes my gold stilettos. Chester lifts my hand he is holding and lays it on his bicep. Now I’m the one laughing at his silly action.

“My feet are going to hurt. Not my freaking hand.”

“I’ll carry you back home because that’s what knights in shining armour do.”

Chapter Eighteen

Chester

Evangeline grabs my hand as she jumps up onto a little wall, balancing on it with our hands entwined. I try not to pay much attention to how right it feels. Her hand is small and delicate compared to my large one, and she grabbed it so effortlessly, as if she has done it a million times before.

I welcome the soft touch because it feels natural, like our hands belong together. It makes me smile at how free she’s behaving. She asks the questions that are on her mind, and her actions aren’t stopped by any doubts about what other people will think of her.

It’s different, refreshing, and I like it.

“So, where are we going?” she asks for the fourth time.

“You’ll see.” She halts abruptly before groaning and throwing her head back. It only makes me chuckle at how cute she behaves. Her emotions aren’t hidden or hindered by anything. She breathes freely, and somewhere deep inside of me, I believe she feels safe and comfortable around me.
