“Thomas Meyer, right?” Moreen asks as if she doesn’t know his name. “It would take me but a few minutes to leak this all to the press. All of it. The reputation you have will be gone in a blink of an eye and your company will take hit after hit. So, yes, this wedding is off and we’re leaving with Evangeline.” I smile at her with happiness falling over me because she’s my friend, and for the first time, my future looks different because I have so many great people by my side.

Thomas walks backward to lick his wounds and starts throwing glances at everyone in the room. Chester walks away from me, and with an abrupt movement, he has Frederic against the wall with his arm pushing against my brother’s neck. Frederic’s eyes grow large, and he starts to claw at Chester’s arm, but to no avail.

“You listen here, you bastard,” Chester snarls in his face. “If you ever dare to come near us, I’ll rob you of your freedom because you behind bars would be the least you deserve. We’re done, and that means you and your sister as well.”

Frederic’s jaw tightens, and he doesn’t speak nor does he move.

“Forcing someone to get married is a criminal offence. So is stealing trade secrets. Both you’re getting away with. But the second you meddle with our lives again, I’ll sue you for everything and anything. You hear me?” Chester pushes his arm against Frederic’s neck, my brother finally caves, and a feeling of pure relief hits me.

My life is mine, and so are my choices.

“That’s what I thought.” Chester lets go of my brother and quickly grabs my hand. We start to walk away. We pass Thomas and my mum, who have looks of defeat on their faces.

My dress sweeps over the floor, and I’m finally escaping my worst nightmare. My smile is broad and I can’t wipe it off my lips. I might not smile all the time, but I’ll be chasing happiness every step of the way now.

Chester pushes the back door of the church open, and it smells like freedom. I stumble on the little step, and we stand still for a second, then he pulls me into his arms.

“Princess,” he says with those bright eyes, and my smile grows even larger. I breathe in deeply, smelling his scent, and it feels like coming home.

“Aren’t you glad you escaped marriage?” I whisper, kissing him softly. His lips curl during our kiss, and then slowly, he withdraws.

“I’ll marry you someday, princess.” I turn into a swooning mess, and this time, I’m not sure how many positive feelings my body can handle. It isn’t quite used to it. “You know, just to make sure your brother doesn’t interrupt our life with another idea of marrying you off to some weirdo for money.”

“Of course.” I play along, but marriage doesn’t matter to me that much. It only matters that I have what belongs to me, and that’s freedom, but more importantly, I have the chance to fall deeper in love with my neighbour. That I can love him for as long as it burns, and I’m certain it’ll be a very long time.

I close the gap between us, and I kiss the man who stole my heart and made me dream of freedom the first time I saw him kick out one of his one-night stands. And he kisses me back slowly. Like a knight in shining armour, he dips me low and kisses me with all he has.

“Can you stop that, please? I’d like to go home.”

“I think they’re cute,” Topper adds.

“You’re just jealous, Moreen,” Chester says when he pulls back with that broad smile on his lips. My eyes catch Moreen’s, and that painful look is there.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” she says, passing us. “Now, let’s fucking go. I can’t stand this happy shit.” I smile because I don’t believe a word she says. Moreen fought for us as well. She believed a solution existed, and it did. Moreen has a heart, and it beats beneath her iron layers that serve to protect her.

Chester turns my way again, and with a playful smile, he reaches over and kisses me once more. My heart pounds in my chest. This is what I’ve wanted, and when I grab his jacket, I know I’ll never let go.

“Let’s go,” Moreen yells again.

“Fine,” Chester snaps, and with our hands entwined, we walk into a future that holds no rules or expectations. Just him and me, and love.

Epilogue

Evangeline

Three weeks later

My white dress shimmers brightly because of the sun casting its light through the large windows. It’s beautiful outside and warm enough to leave the coats at home. The city is alive and breathes a positive energy I’ve adopted the moment I stepped inside this place that will dictate my future even more.

Life took a turn the day I fought for what I wanted and when my knight in shining armour busted through those church doors, and I’ve been on cloud nine ever since. I’ve no desire to ever leave, and while I’m sure that’s not possible, right now nothing could wipe the smile off my face. Happiness and joy are coursing through my veins.

I’ve never been happier in my life than at this moment. Colour has been brought back to my life, and its strength makes me believe nothing is impossible.

I have what I always wanted. I’m rich because of the love and friendships in my life, and if someone ever tried to steal it from me, I’ll fight for it. It means the world to me after all.

The corners of my mouth lift even more, when his blue-greyish eyes flicker to mine. His black and white suit fits him perfectly, and I swallow when those biceps flex. A broad smile is on his handsome face, and those eyes are filled with nothing but love. He holds my hand tightly in his, and I squeeze it to remind him I’ll never let go.

This is worth fighting for.
