Mafia filth.I want to tell him that Dante is the most decent man I’ve ever met but I hold my tongue. The less I say the better.

“Don’t worry,” he laughs. “It was only me who saw you climbing out of his car behind the park yesterday. I happened to be in the area because I was rowing.”

Damn it.We chose that park because it’s secluded. It’s so typical of my rotten luck that Matthew saw us. But how does he know Dante or recognize Dante’s car?

“Consider this damage control and a warning to stop fucking around with him.” His voice is as condescending as his haughty glare.

“How dare you?” I steel my spine. “You can’t tell me what to do. You’re all over the gossip magazinesfucking aroundwith whoever you want, but I’m supposed to be sitting down waiting for you?”

“Newsflash, yes I can tell you what to do. After all I’m your future husband.”

“Not by my choice. You’re the last person I want to marry.”

All he does is laugh. “Your words mean shit to me, but you should take heed of mine because you don’t know who you’re dealing with. You don’t know the first thing about Dante Levitsky.”

Hearing him say Dante’s name throws me but I keep try to keep composed. “I know what I need to know.”

“You know what he allows you to know. Come on Serenity, he’s in the Bratva. One of the fucking leaders and one of the most dangerous men in America. The man kills people. He’s who you get when you need to assassinate a person because he’s the best. And it doesn’t stop there.” He shakes his head and I shiver. “Dante Levitsky is also second in power in the Creed.”

The Creed? That doesn’t sound good. Apart from a video game or something to do with religious beliefs, I’ve never heard that term in regard to a group. “What’s the Creed?”

His smile widens. “Oh wow he left out that part.”

“Just tell me what it is.” My brows snap together and I ball my hands at my sides.

“The Creed. It’s an alliance of some of the biggest crime lords in this world, and your guy is second in power. His uncle is the leader. So guess who will be next in line?”

Dante.

I swallow past the thick mass of fear clogging up my throat and try to steady my mind from shattering.

“How do you know all this?”

“I’m enroute to becoming one of Boston’s biggest lawyers. I know my shit, so

believe me when I say you are way, way,way inoveryour head. You don’t know who the man really is and what he’s capable of. There is no scenario where this ends well for you.

“He knows who you are and who your father is. Marriage aside, I’m genuinely telling you, you need to be sensible here. And even more careful. A Bratva man like that will always have something more up his sleeves, especially in this case because your father is the governor.” He steps closer and desire lights up his eyes. “What you need to be asking yourself is what does a man like that want with you? Yes you’re beautiful. I don’t want to marry you either, but even I can see that. But that’s the kind of man who can get plenty of pussy wherever and whenever he wants.”

I hate to think it, but he’s right. It’s not like I didn’t think it already. I just wanted to believe I was special.

“You have no idea what he might be planning or what he might want from you,” he adds leaning in the way a predator would before launching at its prey. “Don’t you think it was odd that you met him in the first place.”

His words twists my insides into more knots than what was already there, but I don’t want to believe him. It was me who chased Dante when he warned me away.

I was the one who pursued him.

At the same time, Matthew is right about a number of things. The main thing being that it was odd that I met him. Dante knew everything about me in depth.

When Matthew’s smile becomes a gloat of triumph I feel worse and worry about what he’ll do next.

“Are you going to tell my father?”

“I haven’t decided on that part yet. Maybe I want you to beg me.” He laughs. “Or, maybe I want you to spread your legs for me like you have been for your mafia prince.”

Bile burns my insides like caustic acid. I’d rather take the heat from Dad than let this man touch me. Nothing is worth that.

“No. I won’t be doing that, so you can leave now.” I don’t know where I find the strength to answer him like that, but I’m grateful that part of my mind hasn’t checked out.
