At the same time, I need to speak to Virgo. He should know that I did the very thing I said I wouldn’t do. I fucked up.

I grit my teeth, release Serenity from my grasp and answer the phone.

“Hey,” he says first. “I thought I’d call to see if we could talk, but I also need to see you. I’m in Long Island. I can be with you in a few hours once I wrap up what I’m doing. I’m definitely on to something.”

His voice sounds far, far away as if he’s talking to me from the top of a mountain and his words are being carried to me by the wind.

“Virgo,” I rasp, my voice barely audible as well to my ears.

“What’s going on?”

I glance back at Serenity, feeling more ashamed and I realize it’s time to start thinking with my head and not my heart.

I have to fix this.

It starts with the truth. “We have a problem.”

“What kind of problem?”

“She knows.”

Chapter34

Serenity

I walk into the rose garden. My heart lifts when I see Avery sitting on the bench by the water fountain.

She’s gazing at the Koi carp fish in the pond. Her bright auburn hair is glistening in the sun and her light hazel eyes brighten as she looks at me.

I smile and rush to her side.

It’s been so long since I’ve seen her. It feels like a lifetime.

“Avery, I’m so happy to see you” I say, hugging her hard. I worse dream ever that we were in a car crash and she died.

I pull back to look at her. It’s strange I can feel her but it’s like she’s not there. She’s smiling though and she looks so happy.

“Did you pick out your dress?” she ask, excitement shines in her eyes.

“My dress? What dress?”

“For the wedding.”

“What wedding?” I narrow my eyes.

“Yours, silly.” She laughs and gives me an incredulous glare. “Seriously girl. You need to wake up.”

“I’m awake.”

The smile falls from her face and suddenly a patch of blood covers the front of her white top. We both look down at it watching it grow and grow.

“Avery, no.”

“You have to wake up, Serenity. Before you end up like me.”

Suddenly she’s covered in blood.

I jump out of the nightmare. A silent scream that doesn’t come lodges in my throat.
