Arrogance on some guys is sexy. Not on him, though. It’s incredibly off-putting.

The conversation takes off from there, but not on my part. It's all him talking about himself and how talented he is.

Talented lawyer and talented sportsman because he does rowing. Apparently, he rowed for Harvard, and he's continued to keep up the sport.

I stand there absorbing the information like a sponge but not really listening.

When a millennium has passed, a screech of excitement cuts into our conversation, and we both turn to see Bella, one of Natalie's friends, bouncing toward us.

She’s been in Europe at some Swedish spa. I didn't expect her to come tonight, but from the look she’s giving Matthew, it seems like she’s here because she heard he would be.

"Matthew Bouchard," she bubbles, giving him a hug when she reaches us. "I haven't seen you in forever."

"Haven't seen you either." From the way he looks her up and down, I know straight away that theymorethan just know each other. I'd be very foolish not to notice the I-had-sex-with-you-several-times vibe rippling off them.

"Well, let's catch up," she says, as if I'm not standing here.

"Sure. Let’s grab a drink."

"You know what I like." She giggles, and the two walk off.

I stand there looking at them as they walk away.

I’m glad I’m not talking to Matthew anymore, but I’m shocked they both treated me as if I don’t exist.

I look around and realize everyone’s engaged in conversation. Dad isn’t even out here.

I’m by myself. If I left now, no one would notice.

I glance at my watch to check the time. It's ten-thirty. If I left now, I could be at the club in an hour.

Eleven-thirty.Would that be too late to meet him?

I guess I'll only know if I try.

With that reasoning, I leave.

I scan the crowd of people on the dance floor looking for her.

I don't think Serenity would've gone down there first if she were coming to see me, but I'll look anyway, just to check.

It's almost midnight. I figured if she was going to come tonight, she would've been here at maybe around nine or ten.

I've been here since six, so it’s not like I would have missed her if she’d come and gone. My bouncers would've also definitely told me if she came and asked for me, especially now that she knows my name.

Maybe she came to her senses and decided not to show up.

If that were the case, it wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Not coming here tonight might be best for us both.

As it’s so late, I think it’s safe to say she’s not coming.

Time to leave, then.
