At one point, Serenity looked right at me, as if I were standing in front of her.

I observed her, and when she allowed her towel to fall off her body, I knew I was in for a bittersweet treat.

That little display drove me as insane as intended. She had me jerking off right there like an idiot with his dick in his hands.

When she switched off the lights, I stayed there until I felt she was asleep. That's when I went over and slipped the note under her door.

God help me. I was tempted to go inside, march up to her room, and wake her up in her little bed to show her what she was missing.

But… she's only missing that part of us because of me. Because I won't give it to her, and I won't take it from her.

Now look at me here, thinking about a woman while I'm on a job. The first job my uncle has entrusted me with since getting back. I don't intend to mess this up, but as the past has proven, things can happen that you don't expect.

I didn't expect to mess that last job up either, but look how that ended.

I shouldn’t be thinking about Serenity in anyway or hanging around her apartment when I have bigger things to worry about. Virgo and I are still looking through Jason’s emails and personal files, but we haven’t found anything more of use. Virgo also hasn’t been able to decrypt the encryption he found.

The hope I felt when he first told me about it is fading and I don’t know where else to look.

I straighten in the chair when I hear a sound. That should be Davide.

This should be an easy kill. Everything has run smoothly so far. I tracked Davide to this cabin on the outskirts of Boston.

While he’s been away trying to organize his escape out of the country, I’ve been here waiting with my men who are hidden away outside. They’re here for backup if I need it.

The front door scrapes open before footsteps sound on the floorboards. Next comes Davide’s voice. He's on the phone speaking Italian.

As I'm in the living room sitting in the dark, he won't see me straight away. He'll look at the window I left open first and realize it was closed when he left the house. By the time he realizes all of that, it'll be too late.

Just as I preempted, Davide walks right in, switches on the light, and looks straight at the opened window. Then he looks at me sitting in the corner.

The sight of me freezes him in place, and he drops the phone. He’ll know what my presence here means, and since most people are fucking terrified of me, he’ll know how ruthless I am.

“Dante, um,” he stutters. “I can explain.”

I put out my cigarette.

He garbles something else that comes out like a muffle, and before he corrects himself, I pull out my gun and shoot him straight in the head.

The fucker probably doesn't even realize he's dead until his body slumps on the ground.

I wasn’t interested in hearing what he had to say. This man thought it was a good idea to kill another man's wife and her child because she wouldn't sleep with him. End of story. So, no, he doesn't get to plead for his life or beg for mercy.

I take out my phone and call Borya. He answers on the first ring.

“I need a clean-up crew,” I tell him. “Tell them to take the body straight to the crematorium.”

“Sure, boss.”

I hang up. Then fire off a message to Igor, letting him know the job is done.

When I walk out of the room, I don't even look back to spare Davide another glance.

I walk out like I’m the judge, jury, and executioner, but in the end, I’ll probably be sitting right next to Davide in Hell.

This is my life, Serenity. When I told you I was a bad man, this is what I meant. This is what I do.

As much as I want her, I know she deserves better, so I need to draw the line on this thing we have. I need to do it whether I want to or not.
