“I don’t know,” Aurora replies.

In the main house, she says, “I am going to talk with Hayden.”

I nod and take in the art decorating the walls. I never expected him to be the artsy type. Time loses any significance. I am still looking at a black and white photograph, when he says, “Follow me.”

Inside his office, Hayden points toward a seat on the couch. “I will have your passport ready by tomorrow. You can leave the moment I return. I also deposited enough money into your new bank account. That should give you plenty of time to decide what you want to do with the rest of your life.”

“Thank you, but that would be too much.”

“It was intended for Aurora, and she insists you should have it.”

My incredible friend.

“Please, watch out for her.”

“I will.”

“Who is the woman?”

A myriad of expressions crosses his face. “I have work to do, starting with not going to war with Cato and Kieran.”

He doesn’t seem to be fazed by that. He turns his focus to the big screens in front of him.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. You offered me the perfect opportunity to teach them a lesson in humbleness.”

I smile, because yes, they are beyond cocky.

“When I return, I expect you to tell me where my jet will take you.”

He’s a man of few words. Something tells me he doesn’t like to repeat himself.

I nod and leave him, searching for my friend. Aurora is in her bedroom, crying. I rush to her and hug her. She says, through hiccups, “Kieran doesn’t believe me. He thinks I played him.”

“I’m so sorry.”

We fall asleep, both sniffling. Freedom loses its appeal with every second.

What have I done?

Chapter 26

Kieran’s voice penetrates the fog in my brain as he shakes me awake. I pull myself upright. A headache splits my head, and my movements are sluggish.

“What the fuck happened?” I search for Chiara, but her side of the bed is empty.

“They took the girls.”

That one sentence brings clarity to my foggy head, and I scoot upright.

“No one would be that foolish to come after what’s ours . . . Unless . . .”

Brave woman, you played me.Disappointed at myself, mad at her, my feelings split me apart.

He checks his phone, and his face transforms into undiluted rage.

“Fuck, she played me.”
