Is he stupid? That woman loves him, even I can admit that. This has my wife’s name written all over it. Dejection settles in. And only for Chiara would Aurora risk all this, loyal to the bone. She’s not a lamb, she’s the fucking queen. The deadly energy he carries cuts through the air.

“Calm the fuck down.”

“I’m calm.” Kieran grits his teeth. His eyes have this crazy glint in them while telling me Aurora’s chip isn’t sending the signal.

He smashes a chair against a wall when Daniel brings him the footage from last night and he realizes Aurora is in on the escape plan.

“Let’s go. Cameron is waiting for us.”

At the compound, Kieran yells orders and everyone shuffles around, giving him what he wants, mostly what they have on Hayden.

“They must be here.” I point at the house sprawled in the middle of nowhere in Florida, surrounded by thick forests. I would prefer one with remote access. Hayden has almost succeeded in hiding it from us, but we wouldn’t be this good if we didn’t have men follow him to every location he has been to since he appeared on our radar.

“Man, are you okay?”

I must be losing it if Cameron needs to ask me if I am okay.

“Why wouldn’t I be?”

“Because we both know this was not my sister’s doing.”

I tip my chin in acknowledgement.

“I would have given Chiara everything.”

Cameron pats my back and shame burns at me for how stupid I have been. She played me so damn well, I am hollow inside.

“You wanted her, her alone . . . no other woman would have succeeded at playing you.”

“And I still do.”

Kieran’s phone rings, and he puts it on speaker.

“I will come to you, but if you send your army and injure my men—”

“Do you fucking think I care? I will kill you and spill your fucking blood in front of your men.”

Cameron takes the phone from Kieran. “We’re not patient men.”

He hangs up, and Cameron says to our men, “Leave us alone.”

They scurry outside, and he slaps his palms on the table.

“I can deal with you, one after the other, but not at the same time. We are three to keep the fucking balance. Kieran, talk to Aurora. And you, fucking wake up from your coma.”

With that, Cameron slams the door behind him. “Did he just berate us?”

Even Kieran’s lips arch into a half smile.

“Aurora wouldn’t have done this on her own.”

I lost Chiara, but I won’t lose my best friend.

“I know.” Kieran drags a hand through his hair. “But what if I wanted her so bad, it blinded me . . .”

I should have said that. Not him.

“When the fuck did we allow them to have so much control over us?”
