I severed his trust, and it hurts more than anything else. Still, I try again.

“I love you.”

He thrusts inside me and stars pop in my vision.

His hand wraps around my neck, squeezing lightly. “Stop spewing lies.”

He hits all the right places, stretching and filling me so good.

“I love you.”

“I warned you.” His hold on my neck increases, turning my face toward the tree, continuing to fuck me in a savage rhythm.

“I love you.”

I come as he explodes inside me, both breathing heavily.

He releases me and tucks himself in his pants with more anger than before.

“I know you love me,” I say, arranging my dress.

“At least one of us knows.” He lets out a self-deprecating laugh that cuts me. I didn’t lose him. I refuse to believe that.

I follow him through the forest in stilted silence. When the compound’s dim light flickers through the woods, I run toward the compound and cry out in relief when I find Aurora smiling at Kieran. I rush to her side.

“You’re awake. I’m so sorry. I’m so, so sorry.”

“Hey, it’s okay, I am sure you’ve beaten yourself up enough.”

I can’t believe I have this amazing woman as my best friend.

“She needs to rest.” Kieran grits his teeth, but I ignore him. He won’t do a thing now, and he knows it.

“I’m okay, baby.” She caresses his cheek and just like that, he relaxes, the good to his bad, the light in his life.

“Where are we?”

Kieran tells her everything.

“I’m sorry I worried you.”

“Don’t do it again.”

It’s both a plea and a threat.

“I won’t ask for permission, but I will tell you next time.”

“That’s all I want.”

Alessandra checks on her. “You were lucky.”

Hayden comes in. Aurora smiles at him and he caresses her hand.

“Thank you.”

“Anything for you.”

Cameron steps between them, and it’s almost comical their brotherly jealousy.
