Aurora bites down on her lip to suppress her smile and Cameron chastises her, “I would do anything for you, but if you ever pull that shit . . .”
She rolls her eyes at him, and Kieran shoots him a glare.
“Why am I so tired?”
Alessandra explains to her that it’s the medicine and her body needs to heal.
“I want to go home.”
“The moment you can, we’ll be out of here,” Kieran assures her.
He sways his gaze to each of us. “Leave, my wife needs rest.” I huff and the other two grunt.
I watch over my shoulder how she pats the spot next to her, and it warms my heart when he says, “I don’t want to hurt you.”
She insists, and he climbs in bed next to her.
“Wow, that’s intense,” Alessandra says.
“I know.” A vise grips my own heart.
“To be loved like that . . .”
“One has to accept craziness willingly in their life.” I complete her sentence, and we sigh.
I prop on one of the makeshift beds scattered around the compound, and she takes the one next to me.
“What did he mean when he said her life for yours?”
She stiffens, and I rush to add, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked. That was inappropriate.”
“Hayden and I . . . we were so in love, and then I had to make a choice.”
She looks at him and dabs at the wetness in her eyes.
“Our love was fated to end in tragedy. At least now, I know I will leave him in better hands.” She looks at Aurora and smiles. “I was madly and insanely jealous of her.”
“And now?”
“Now, I realized it was all a ploy to make me jealous.”
“I guess it worked.”
“Yes, how about you?”
“I wanted my freedom, and I had no idea what it would cost me.”
“What?”
“Everything.”
She nods as if understanding, and I don’t doubt she does. It’s as if we’re kindred spirits.
“Ever since Hayden told me I’m free, I’m not even in a hurry to leave.”
“We should have our heads examined.”
I fall asleep and wake up with blurry eyes, cupping my belly. I had the most beautiful dream. I want to tell Cato about our baby girl in my dreams, how she looked just like him, how he loves us both so much.
