He shakes his head at me and storms away. I will win him over.

At the breakfast table, Kieran helps Aurora to her seat, while she rolls her eyes at him, but still looks smitten.

I squeal and rush to her, but before I can hug her, Kieran shoves a hand in my face, stopping me.

“Baby, it’s okay.”

“Do not hurt her.”

Can he be any more of a dick? But it’s hard to stay mad at him for protecting her.

I still hug her, or better said, brush my arms around her.

“It took me forever to convince him I can stand up, and a hundred reassurances later from Alessandra, here I am. I call it a success,” she whispers.

I burst into laughter, and she winces when she laughs. Kieran’s eyes snap to us, murder in his irises when they halt on me, utter puppy love when they find hers. This man should be studied. It’s unrealistic how he can switch his feelings on and off.

When we finish breakfast, she wins the battle for us to go outside.

“You’d think I was shot ten times.”

“One is all it takes,” I remind her.

“I know, it’s just, his worry is . . .”

“You got shot,” Alessandra says.

“Fine, I am dropping it.”

We find a bench, and Aurora elbows me.

“Any progress?”

“With getting back in the fortress? It will take a miracle.”

“He should be thankful. Just saying, you would have kept trying until you would have gotten your way.”

“Next time, call me, I am way better at hatching plans than you two, obviously,” Alessandra says.

“Yes, because from your ivory tower, it would be so easy to mastermind a plan,” Aurora replies.

Alessandra flips us off, and we burst into laughter. The commotion gets the attention of the guys, who are everything but subtle from the other side of the pavement as they watch us.

“Stop making her laugh,” Kieran says in a low tone.

I roll my eyes at him and ask Alessandra, “So, what about you? You should have been long gone.”

“I’m still watching over Aurora.”

“I’m fine, and we fly back tomorrow.”

She huffs. “I don’t know what to do.”

“Come back with us. Return to your job as a doctor.”

But as I exchange looks with Aurora, it’s clear Alessandra wants that.

When Kieran takes Aurora away, Alessandra says, “He’s intense.”
