I nod and find Hayden’s gaze fixed on her.

“He’s looking at you.”

“How?”

“Like he wants to devour you.”

“Good.”

She turns her back to him, and I suppress a smile.

“Will you tell me about you two?”

“Maybe one day.”

The housekeeper calls and she goes to her. Hayden is right behind her, and you can see the tension between them.

I approach Cameron and Cato. My heart squeezes in my chest when I hear them talking about divorce settlements, and a new contract drawn between my family and his.

“There is one small problem.” I cross my arms.

“And that would be?” Cameron asks as Cato pins me with a stare.

“He is still married to me, and I’m not signing them.”

“You will sign these papers.”

“No.”

“No?”

“Are you deaf, Cato? I said no.”

“Chiara.” Cameron pinches the bridge of his nose.

Cato stands up, towering over me. “Don’t make me force you, but you will sign the divorce papers.”

“No.”

He storms away like a petulant child—well, at times, he is one. I plop on the chair next to Cameron and push away the papers.

“Why is he so set on letting me go?” We went through hate, distrust, murder attempts; there is more to this.

“One guy escaped, and he is in Italy, protected by a very powerful family. I don’t know if you are aware, but allegiances in the mafia are what keeps the balance and the less liabilities, the better.”

And being his wife makes me a liability. “I won’t leave him.”

“You should have thought of that before. He’s one stubborn man.”

“I will deal with him.”

Cameron gathers the papers and I go in search of Cato. I find him in the guest room, pacing around. He stops, feeling me, just like I feel him. It’s this indelible connection––our souls are interconnected.

“How much do you want? I was going to offer you a few hundred million.”

I dig my finger in his chest.

“You won’t buy me out of our marriage.”
