I giggle.

“I love to hear you giggling.” A beat later, he asks, “What did she tell you?”

I bite down on my lip.

“I’m not afraid of her.”

“I wasn’t asking that.”

“And I don’t want to talk about this.”

“Cara.”

“How was your flight?”

“Cara.”

“We didn’t get to shop.”

“Cara.”

“You really are thickheaded.” The silence prevails. “She threatened me . . .”

“I’m sorry, so fucking sorry I failed you.”

“I would marry you a hundred times over just to have you love me, to be mine, my lovely sinner. And you should know by now, threats don’t work on your wife.”

“I miss you.”

“Just a couple of days longer.”

I bite down on my lip and I look up at the stars starting to flicker dimly in the darkening sky, praying for his safe return.

Chapter 40

I’m pacing the floor of my villa on the east coast of Italy, enraged to the point of wanting to kill and bury all twelve of the Council and Luciana along with them. But I can’t.

“Tell me the fucking truth,” I demand from Kieran.

“She is your wife, and if she finds me staring at her every five minutes, she might stab me, or worse, I’ll stab her. She’s keeping me from my wife.”

I love how vicious Chiara is, and I chuckle.

“You’re going to pay for this. And don’t get yourself killed, will you?”

Who has time to die? Death can go fuck itself. I will grow old with my wife, put a few kids in her belly, and watch them grow up. My tainted soul will be even more worthy after some more decades of living happily.

“Cato, if you want to kill them all, do it. It’s your decision, and I will stand by you. We will stand by you. But death would be too easy for them. And what better way to get revenge than making sure Luciana suffers.”

“She did a number on Enzo.” Before Chiara and I made up, I was a mental wreck, so I wasn’t there when Enzo made the Syndicate a proposition. One that was too good to ignore.

“Through him, we could control the west coast. And all he wants in exchange is for us to bring her to him. Alive.” And that’s the problem, he couldn’t get her on his own. She is protected by the Council, and no one else dared to take them on, until us.

Alive. That proves challenging, especially since she dared to approach my wife, but passing up the chance would be stupid. And knowing that ruthless motherfucker, he’d make her days miserable.

All week, we enlisted help from our contacts from all over the world. It cost us a fortune, but we finally have the upper hand.

“I think we’re finally there, Kieran.”
