“Yes, if we pull this off.”

Hayden rounds the corner, a glass of whiskey dangling from his hand. I snatch the glass from him and down it.

“Alliances are better, Cato. Letting your enemies know you have the power over them is better than eradicating them.”

“Whatever. I had no problem with that strategy.”

“Sergio is still on the loose. We can’t have a repeat of that.”

“Afraid he might kill me?”

“You’re too damn arrogant to let yourself be killed like this.”

“Yes, and how should I go?”

“Nothing spectacular, of old age, not being able to keep your farts in, waking Chiara up because you have to piss a hundred times a night. That should be the punishment for guys like us.”

I burst into laughter, even though a cold shiver rolls down my spine. Yes, that really would be the fucking worse thing possible.

We slip inside the office. On the table, folders are scattered around.

Twelve families form the Council of Twelve. One could say they are the unofficial royalty—ancient Italian families—who have accumulated an enormous amount of money and power, which made it easy for them to fly under the radar. But the joke is on them now.

“Are our men in position?”

“Yes.”

We spend the rest of the day going through the plan, even though both of us know plans rarely go according to . . . well, plan. And this is why we have a backup plan for every plan.

Go to sleep.

I FaceTime her as I climb the stairs, plopping on the bed.

“You know I sleep like shit when you’re not around.”

I smile, catching my goofy expression on the screen. What has this woman done to me? I don’t even care anymore. She loves me, that’s all that matters.

“When are you coming back?”

“Soon,cara.”

She huffs, and I love her impatience, this need to have me around her, when I wear her like a second skin.

“I thought you’d sleep with Aurora.”

“She snuck out.”

I burst into laughter.

“Traitor, but I guess I would have done the same.”

“I would have dragged you to bed.”

“Hey.” She tries to sound annoyed but fails.

My grin splits my face. “Let’s not sugarcoat it,cara. I am not letting you out of my sight when I come back.”

“Start with the honeymoon.”
