On the desk is a contract. I skim through it, my nerves popping with every line. They want an opening through my port, controlling Boston, and she points at it.

“Sign it.”

“I won’t.”

“I thought so.”

She plops in her armchair, her shoulders straight, her long legs peeking from her pencil skirt, and opens her laptop, turning it to me. I freeze as I look at Chiara bound to a chair.

“How much is she worth to you?”

I yank my gun out and point it at her, while she crosses one leg over the other and stares right at the gun.

“Your heart makes you weak, and now that I have found your greatest weakness . . . you’re not even a worthy opponent any longer.”

“If you don’t let her go, I will deliver your limbs to Enzo.”

Her eyes widen, but she quickly gets herself back under control.

“You would not survive the war the Council will bring to your door. I’m that special to them.”

She’ll find out quickly she’s nothing more than an asset. And assets are replaceable.

Chapter 41

I wake up to my phone ringing, and I accept the video call. “Yes.”

“Hello, Chiara.”

I shoot upright, her voice shoving any trace of sleep away.

I stare into her cold eyes. Luciana shows me a live video on her laptop, and my heart constricts in my chest.

A man points a rifle at Cato’s chest while he lies on the bed.

“If you don’t do exactly what I say, he will be dead.”

My heart pounds in my chest and sweat gathers at my nape.

“You have three seconds to decide.”

She starts counting and by two, I cry out, “Stop, I’ll do anything.”

“Pathetic.”

She pauses as if disappointed I gave in. I doubt this woman knows what love is.

“A van is waiting for you outside, if you get caught, he dies.”

She hangs up, and I jump off the bed. Fear strangles my lungs, but I push through it by taking calming breaths and straightening my shoulders. This is not the moment to let emotions overcome me.

Only a few hours back, I talked to him, and now this. I change quickly and tiptoe downstairs. I watch the guards and realize they have reduced the time of their perimeter checks from five minutes, to three minutes.

I take the second break, and run toward the thick trees, bypassing one after the other, while my heart pounds in my chest.

I climb up the wall, and like she said, a van waits for me and a man all in black steps out. A man with cold, brown eyes who pushes me inside. I recognize Sergio from the wall of pictures my husband has with anyone involved with the Council pinned on a board in his home office.

My legs tremble, and I cover my mouth.
