He scoffs. “You don’t know him at all then.”

“I know very well what my husband is capable of, what he did to your family.”

He searches my eyes as if to find a lie, but it’s the truth. I love him, despite knowing it’s wrong. Love doesn’t care about right and wrong.

“He’s two.”

“He’s a very sweet boy.”

“Cato’s not going to let this go.”

“He will.”

He tells me about his family, his expression softening.

“She never wanted this life, but she fell in love with me before I told her who I am and what I do.”

I don’t know what’s worse, not knowing and falling in love with someone like him, or in my case, knowing and still falling in love. “And then she left, I chased, and I remembered I was happy. I told my father and my brother, it’s not wise to cross Cato. But they didn’t want to hear it. I just took her and fled, betraying my family, my blood.”

“You saved your family.”

He looks from his hands to me, and a dejected smile lifts his lips. “You’re a strong woman. Strange, how his darkness doesn’t rub off on you.”

“I’m sure the same goes for your family.”

“Even if Cato doesn’t kill them, Luciana will.”

Oh, not on my watch, that rat of a bitch I would gladly feed to Slith.

I gather his phone from the floor. “Let me help you.” He gestures for me to go for it, and I call Cameron.

“Hi, Cam.”

“Are you all right?”

He shoots off more questions, and I interrupt. “I am fine, and I will be fine, just hear me out.”

To say it went smoothly, convincing him to do the right thing, is an understatement.

“Bring them with you, now.”

I hang up. He blinks at me, and I offer a small smile.

He rises to his feet. “I will forever be in your debt.”

“Don’t thank me yet.”

I call Kieran to let him know where I am and he hangs up, right after saying, “Stop fucking taking matters in your own hands.”

My stomach grumbles, and Sergio says, “I don’t have anything here. Let me get something.”

I nod and caress my temples.I did my part, now you come back home, Cato, because if not, I don’t want to even think about that.

When Sergio returns, he extends his hand, and I take the wrapped sandwich, digging into it. This is how Kieran finds us after storming inside, pointing a gun at Sergio’s head who raises his hands.

I put myself between them. “Put that down.”

“He would have killed you.”
