“You killed his family. Now, let’s show an ounce of human decency.”

Kieran clenches his jaw. “I don’t fucking know if you are a blessing for him or a curse.”

“Drop the gun.”

He reluctantly tucks it at his back.

“I want to speak to my wife.”

Kieran gives him his phone, taking in everything with a certain detachment.

I hear a woman’s voice, and relief surges through him as he mouths a thank you to me.

“If he doesn’t punish you, I will find a way,” Kieran mumbles.

“What a shocker. Not.”

I smile at him all riled up, and he drags a hand down his face. “Watching over you is the hardest thing. It’s because of you, he’s going to have a heart attack before he’s forty.”

I roll my eyes at him and climb in the back of the car while Sergio gets in the other van.

“Don’t kill him, okay?”

“If you’re on a mission to save his life, then . . .”

“There’s been enough killing for a while. And Cato deserves to see a man in the mirror, who’s more than a killer every time he looks at his reflection.”

He nods, and I breathe out, relieved.

“You love him.”

“I don’t have to prove anything to you, even though we should start getting a little bit along, because I am not going anywhere, and I am sure you’re not either.”

He shoots me a glare, as if I needed any reassurance that not even in death will he leave Aurora.

Feeling safe, I put my head on the window, and the engine lulls me to sleep.

“You’re a brave woman.” A compliment from Kieran. Either hell has frozen over or the sky is falling.

“You’re not that bad either.”

And with a small smile, I give in to sleep.

Chapter 42

Only my wife. I wonder what the fuck moved her to put herself in that position. As if the bitch could read my thoughts, Luciana says, “I gave her some incentive.”

Of fucking course.

“She’s the type of woman you could never be, not even in your dreams.”

She waves me off. “You’re right. I would not risk my life for my stupid husband, who thinks he can come into foreign territory without repercussions.”

I unbutton my jacket and sit, crossing one leg over the other, a smirk plastered on my face. She studies me, and my phone rings.

“Hi,amore.”

We’re going to have one hell of a talk when I come back, but hearing her voice, a calmness descends over me.
