“We’re going out, too.” Aurora takes my hand.

I don’t know what surprises me more. The fact that it’s coming from her or that I think we’ll never get past the guards.

“Are you crazy?” I don’t recognize my best friend, but my entire body lights up at the idea.

“Maybe, but your father won’t do anything, and Kieran knows what’s best for him, so that’s one less worry.”

“Would we even know where to go?”

We burst into laughter.

I take my phone out and scroll through it. “Here, we’re going to Poison. Apparently, it’s the best club in town.”

Hours pass as we talk, feeling like nothing else exists but us.

A knock later, my parents come inside, my father observing me. “Don’t do anything stupid. Would you like to eat something?” He smiles at Aurora and my best friend eyes me, confused at the exchange. Welcome to my world.

“No, thank you.”

“Good night. Tomorrow is a big day.”

With his parting words, my shoulders sag.

“Tonight, I will take what I want.”

“We’re not going out to cause problems,” she tries to remind me.

“Live a little before he drags you back to your prison.”

“I want you to be happy, not petty.”

“Sorry, it’s just . . .”

She eyes me with understanding. Inside my closet, I rummage through my dresses and hand her a black cocktail dress. Mine is a backless one, shorter than hers, and I let my hair fall down my back in curls.

We wait until my parents go to sleep for our grand exit.

We change quickly and put on makeup, looking ready to take on the night.

With my heart beating in my throat, we tiptoe downstairs. Now the hard part, slipping out. My neck might snap the way my eyes shift from right to left. I will be so screwed if any of the house staff or my parents find us.

I urge Aurora to hurry and the moment we duck behind the bush, a guard passes by. The guards scan the perimeter while we stay hidden.

“That was close.”

My heart might not survive this night, considering the bungee jumping it does in my chest. I grab her hand, and we pass a few more guards. My heart thumps so loud, I am sure one of them will hear it. We’re almost at the gates, when I come to a screeching halt, and Aurora crashes into my back.

“We have a problem.”

“I already ordered an Uber.”

We drop on our asses and wait when we find the security guy walking back and forth in front of the entry gate. He has to take a break, but half an hour later, we’re still here. I will never get my night of freedom. But as soon as my hopes dim, he peruses the perimeter one more time then his eyes fix on his phone.

I know it in my bones, this is the moment. Here goes nothing.

I grab her hand, duck behind the security booth, and slip outside. I giggle. “I can’t believe we made it.”

At the corner, we grab the Uber, slumping in the back seat, the adrenaline crushing me.
