“One night, I want one night to live, laugh, and be someone I don’t even know I will ever be.”

“I will always be there for you, okay? I love you, and there is nothing I wouldn’t do for you.” Aurora grasps my hand.

It’s the same for me. “Promise.”

“Promise.”

We smile, not giving a damn about the ramifications of getting caught. I am as good as married anyway, and what can my father do if he catches us?

“What about Kieran?”

“He’ll get over it.”

Was I so in my head that I didn’t see this new confidence she has? I like this version of her better.

Tonight, I am going to go all out. I am going to live one night for all the ones I have lost over the years, simply because I am the daughter of a mob boss.

The Uber driver halts. Aurora sighs at the sight of the long line outside the club.

“I’m sorry.”

“Come on.”

I straighten my shoulders and pull my lips into a bright smile at the security guy at the door whose eyes widen in appreciation. I thought it would take more than batting my eyelashes at him, but the bulky man planted in front of the club entrance lets us enter. That was easier than expected.

Inside, black furniture and gold lighting creates a decadent ambience. Music blares around us, people swaying to the beats on the polished floor. I finally relax. Tonight, I am gonna party, and do something else. Cato will never get my virginity. I prefer to give it to a stranger, out of spite.

Putting the plan into motion, we walk to the marbled bar and order a round of tequila, the bartender not bothering to ask our age. One would think that partying is my job by the way I behave. The bartender openly flirts with me, and I lean over the counter, indulging him. He will do. He’s handsome in a boyish way, not in your face. My heart doesn’t pump, my body doesn’t crave him, and my blood doesn’t heat up, which makes him perfect.

We drink one shot.

I realize one of us should remain aware of her senses, but tonight, I don’t care.

I order another round of shots, and Aurora’s brows raise. “Water, Chiara.”

“One more, please. I’ll be good after that, I promise.”

She eyes me with an, ‘I don’t believe you,’ look but lets it be. I need tonight to let loose, and she knows it.

I lift another shot to my lips. A comforting warmth settles in my chest, making me feel unstoppable. Everywhere I look, though, it’s as if Cato haunts me, those eyes, that male power he emanates. How am I going to go through with my plan if he keeps invading all my thoughts? Maybe the alcohol is making me paranoid.

The bartender leans over and whispers in my ear, “You’re beautiful, and I can’t focus.” He has no idea how lucky he will get tonight.

Chapter 12

In the VIP section of my club, I sip from my drink sitting at the far end of the couch. The small entourage downs one glass after the other, women dancing salaciously to get their attention. I catch Kieran shaking his head, an amused smile twitching the corners of his lips. I walk over to him. “What’s up?”

He jerks his chin toward the bar downstairs. Following the direction of his eyes, I crack my neck.

“What the fuck? Man, you have absolutely no control over your wife.”

“Good luck taming your bride.” He has a smitten look on his face.

“What are we going to do?”

“Let them have fun.”

I cock my head. “This is fucked up. Fuck.” I rake a hand through my hair. “Any advice?”
