“Get used to it.”

I take her hand and we find my best friend kissing Aurora against a wall in the hallway. I clear my throat and they take us in. Chiara’s cheeks look like two red dots, while I smirk like the proud bastard I am.

I can’t wait to climb her fortress and conquer it from the outside in.

She grabs Aurora’s hand and off they go toward the dance floor. Kieran sends me a knowing grin.

“Fuck, Chiara drives me crazy. She loves to fucking provoke me. Let’s get shit-faced, because this woman will drive me into an early grave. But I won’t give her the satisfaction.”

I watch Chiara like a hawk, but no one approaches her as they dance and have a few more drinks. Might also be because of the bulky security guys next to them. She just saved a life tonight. Still reeling, I let Kieran make sure the girls get back home safely.

I am halfway to the VIP section when Kieran sends a text.We have a problem.I rush outside and find Kieran tucking Aurora to his side, while Chiara hugs herself, all three standing by the car. I lift Chiara’s chin. “What’s wrong?”

Panic flickers in her eyes, a tremor rocking her body, but she purses her lips.

“You’re coming with me,” Kieran says to Aurora.

“No, she needs me,” Aurora answers.

So, all four of us end up getting in the car. Chiara fidgets with her fingers and the closer we come to her place, the paler she becomes.

Aurora smiles at her, reassuring her, and I tighten my grip on the handle. If the bastard even dares to punish her, I will kill him. No one messes with what’s mine.

We reach the house, and the girls burst into nervous giggles.

“Didn’t think of the coming home part, did we?” Chiara whispers to Aurora.

I exchange a glance with Kieran, who drags a hand down his face, his frustration over the fact that his wife insists on staying with her best friend doesn’t bode well for him.

“Come home with me,” Kieran insists.

“Tomorrow,” Aurora replies. “But you can help us get in unnoticed,” she adds with a bright smile. It’s that smile that gets to him, and he leans in to kiss her. What the fuck happened for them to be so lovey-dovey?

“Or we could just bring you through the main entrance?” he offers.

“No,” Chiara answers, her eyes on me, pleading. It must be the alcohol in her. I sigh, knowing the moment the alcohol vanishes from her bloodstream, she will go back to pretending there is nothing between us. And I will go back to showing her how, in fact, there is.

“Fine.”

Kieran shakes his head at them holding on to each other.

When Daniel, Kieran’s personal security chief, parks, Chiara whispers, “He’s going to kill me.”

“I’d kill him before that,” I vow and get out of the car. Kieran follows behind me.

“She’s going to be my wife tomorrow. Domenico can’t do shit to her.”

I find the security guard sleeping. “Useless fucker.” A ball of anger rolls up and down my back. I curl my fists at my sides, but she bumps into me, and for one second, I forget I intended to kill the guard.

I open the wrought-iron gates. “They don’t even bother to lock it?”

“Don’t wake him up.”

Isn’t she precious, if she only knew what I wanted to do to him.

My anger gets worse with every second. Only one guard is on alert, but with a jerk of my head, he remains in the shadows. We slip inside, and Kieran says, “Where is your room?”

She points to the second story, the last window on the right, and there is a ladder with flowers. The same one I climbed like a horny teenager. Chiara and I exchange a secretive look and I grab her hand. “Climb up.”
