As if his wife would ever pull something like that.

“Anything new about Aurora’s mysterious guy?”

“She hasn’t said anything else.” Frustration is clear in his tone.

“Jealous?”

“He’s a dead man already.”

“Make sure she doesn’t find out.”

“And you make sure you find Sergio before he finds you.”

I wave him off. I am untouchable, at least for a while. I was feared before my killing spree. Now all the other families are terrified they’ll be next so they will be extra diplomatic, kissing my ass, and hoping they don’t do anything wrong.

“I’m heading to the compound.”

“You’re staying there?”

As long as my wife won’t admit she wants me next to her, yes. I can be stubborn too. And distance might dampen my desire. I need a clear head, and my wife has the tendency to make me unhinged.

I mumble a “yes,” and hang up.

In my office, when my men tell me no one has seen Sergio, my mood drops. He can’t have just fucking vanished.

“You’re no fun since you got married,” Cameron says, strolling inside and sitting in a chair in front of my desk.

“Because there is nothing remotely funny about this, Cam.” My desperate need for my wife, Sergio as the loose end.

He turns serious.

“Keep your mind sharp. You don’t need distractions, and I don’t want you to get killed.”

“I won’t.”

I drag myself to my quarters, and thoughts of Chiara turns my body feverish with want. She’s so damn stubborn. I crack my neck, but nothing eases the taut muscles. Nothing quenches my desire for her. A desire synonymous to an unstoppable need. The guilt of thrusting inside her, even though I knew she was sore, is messing with me. But that woman loves to taunt me, and I love to deliver.

The next morning, I meet with my father, hers, and the rest of the family members at the club.

“Cato.” The group says my name in reverence, boosting my ego.

“Take a seat.”

Since I’ve been in charge, I have made them richer without the risk of getting caught. One can hide behind influence and power, but no one is untouchable. But the Syndicate is close. Everyone eats out of our palms. It has taken years to know who can be bought, who to put in high positions, from power-hungry politicians, corrupted judges, to greedy feds in all the right places.

All of them are in our pockets.

We didn’t corrupt the system—it was already corrupted—we just made it play by our rules. We made sure we found the perfect pressure point. It’s not that I don’t know we’re still criminals, but we’re the ones that can fit perfectly into the world of legal business. Businessmen instead of gangsters.

After assuring the families that Sergio will not be a problem and he will be found, they leave. I remain alone with my father. “Your mother would like a family dinner this Friday night.”

“We’ll be there.”

He studies my face. “How is Chiara?”

“I don’t have time for chitchat, Father.”
