“Taking down the oldest organization in the world would prove our power and our reach.”

“We’ll show them not to mess with us.”

We reach the compound, and our men scatter around. Kieran looks outside the window, wearing a pensive expression.

“Afraid my wife will corrupt yours?”

“Only I get to corrupt her.”

Cocky bastard.

Cameron is inside, a deck of cards and a bottle of whiskey in front of him.

“You never learn, do you?” I taunt him with a smirk.

“I’m going to wipe you out tonight.”

We play a few rounds and I win them all, which only angers Cameron.

I call it a night and crash on the bed, but not before typing out a message to Chiara.

You’re going to pay for that little stunt.

Chapter 23

The moment the elevator doors close, I grab Aurora’s hand and we walk toward the sofa.

“Are you okay?”

She looks me straight in the eyes. “Chiara, I love you and maybe how we began worried you, but I’m happy with Kieran. I love him, and I choose this life. Please respect that.”

Positively surprised at her assertiveness, I elbow her. “The dick is rubbing off on you.”

She giggles, and who am I to judge? I let my enemy fuck me, enjoying all the things he does to my body. And yes, I should accept that she chooses this life. The way Aurora and Kieran look at each other is hard to ignore.

“And you?”

I feel terrible. But if I don’t lie, I have to accept something I am not ready for nor will I ever be ready to accept—whatever happens between me and Cato. She sighs at my silence. I plop next to her on the sofa and tears burn in my eyes. “I just want to leave.”

“That bad?”

The fact that it’s actually not bad has me bawling because this should have never happened. Instead, I say, “I can’t . . . he’s a monster.” My heart squeezes because it hurts speaking badly of him, even in front of my friend. But she’s aware that neither of them are saints.

“Why do we meet so seldom?”

“You’re still in the honeymoon phase.”

Her eyes turn dreamy, and she blushes. “It was . . . I wish . . .”

“That good, huh?”

“Yes.”

“So, college?”

“Yes, I have enrolled and got accepted to Boston University. I can’t believe I’m going to be an English literature major. I don’t want to know what Kieran had to do to make it happen, but I will take this chance.”

She’s transformed in such a short time. I’m happy she found her place, even though it took away her innocence. But isn’t that what living means, shedding your innocence and building shields to protect you?
