A piece of my jewelry lies on the table, and she spots the necklace, eyeing it with delight. “You started again?”

“I did and Lauren said she’ll help me with finding stores for them.”

“She’s incredible. She helped me get enrolled in school. The guys really depend on her.”

“I got the same impression.”

I guess Lauren is the kind of woman we would have become, if we had different upbringings. It’s not too late, though. I have plenty of time to become the woman I want to be. This is just a small hurdle.

“Let’s watch a movie,” I suggest.

As Aurora scrolls through the selections, I prepare popcorn, and we dig right into it. This is like back at boarding school when we had only each other, and for a few moments, everything was right in our world.

I show her to a guest room, and she’s on her phone, typing. She looks happy, so I should let it go. I don’t want to lose her when I leave this all behind.

I am in bed when a message hits my inbox, and a shiver of excitement trickles down my spine.

I fall asleep with a smile on my lips, knowing I will love every second of Cato’s punishment.

The next morning, in the living room, Aurora jumps when the elevator doors slide open. She and Kieran meet halfway, both wearing a kind of desperation for the other that it’s hard to miss. Meanwhile, my husband is brooding, his eyes darkening. It’s a clear sign he’ll fuck me, and hard. I clench my legs in anticipation.

“Would you like to stay for breakfast?” I offer, to which Cato mouths, “Nice try.”

Oh, I might get more than I bargained for, but what did he expect? He can go fuck himself.

“Another time. We have something else planned.” Kieran’s voice is thick with innuendo. After Aurora and I hug goodbye, he ushers her into the elevator.

The doors close. With every step Cato takes in my direction, I take one back, trepidation kicking up my pulse. It’s exhilarating being under the scope of a predator—a beautiful, lethal predator.

“Caught you.”

My back hits the floor-to-ceiling window, caging me in. He oozes addictive manpower. He wraps his hand around my neck, rubbing his nose up and down my cheek.

“I thought about what I should do to you the entire night . . .” The words he doesn’t say are heard loud and clear.

I shudder, wetting my suddenly dry lips.

“I did nothing wrong,” I whisper, the lie tasting bitter on my tongue.

“You hid yourself. You hid us from your friend, from mine as well. Tell me, why?”

“Instinct.”

“Instinct, huh? Well, wife, let me show you what happens when I let myself be led by instinct.”

He scoops me up and carries me up the stairs.

I gulp, thrilled, so eager for what he’ll do to me.

He doesn’t throw me on the bed like I expected but places me down before circling me.

“Should I tell you first or show you?”

“Does one exclude the other?”

“Nice try.”

His mouth slams on mine, and the hunger pouring from his lips has me biting his as if we share this need for the other, visceral and so damn strong it will burn us both to nothing but embers. But the fire will never extinguish.
