Before she could think on it, she blurted, “I don’t think Bronx would corner me.”

The dragonwoman blinked. “You don’t?’

She shook her head and spoke the truth she’d long been denying. “I trust him.”

Kai spoke up. “Right, well, for now, you’ll spend the night with Brenna and Killian. In the morning, you can chat with whoever you need to. But Bronx wanted me to pass on a message.”

Her heart rate kicked up. “What is it?”

“That he wouldn’t ever force a kiss or the frenzy on you. It’s your choice.”

Her eyes pricked with tears. Of course he would say that.

And she believed him.

Her dragon spoke up.Good. Because I like him.

Kai grunted. “And your dragon is back?”

Percy was tired of constantly lying to everyone. “Yes, for now.”

“Good.” He gestured toward the dragonwoman. “Myla will escort you back to Stonefire. I’ll follow behind you two at a safe distance, just to make sure no one’s following us. You never know with dragon hunter arseholes.”

As they headed back toward Stonefire, they all remained quiet, probably to avoid attracting unwanted notice. However, even with words or reassurances, Percy knew in her gut that Kai would protect her, if it came to it. She felt the same about Myla at her side, who gave her warm smiles every once in a while.

And unlike even a month ago, Percy thought the woman’s warmth and concern was genuine.

Her dragon stirred but then went back to sleep. That was probably for the best, because the closer they drew to Stonefire, the more exhaustion weighed her down. Not just from all the running, but also from her emotions going through the wringer, as well.

Percy was so tired that she barely murmured greetings to Brenna and Killian before she showered, ate, and fell asleep, wondering what she’d say to Bronx the next time she saw him.

ChapterTwenty-Seven

The next morning, Percy woke up, dressed, and went looking for Brenna or Killian. She found the dragonwoman in the kitchen, feeding her son. Watching Brenna make airplane noises before guiding a spoon to the baby’s mouth made Percy smile.

Brenna cleaned up the mess that hadn’t made it into her child’s mouth before glancing at Percy. “You’re up. Are you hungry?”

She nodded. “But maybe not what he’s having.”

Brenna chuckled. “It’s not bad, just pureed fruit. But I think after the shocker of yesterday, you could do with a fry up.”

She slid into one of the chairs at the small table in the kitchen. “That sounds lovely.”

Brenna held out the bowl and spoon. “Do you want to feed Tiernan for me? I promise he doesn’t bite.”

She hesitated a second, but then the baby gnawed on his tiny fist, and Percy decided surely something so tiny couldn’t be that scary. Gingerly, she took the spoon, loaded it with the fruit mush, and merely put it to the baby’s lips. He took it inside his mouth and made babbling noises after he swallowed.

Before she could convince herself not to, she asked, “Is it hard being a mother?”

Brenna flipped the bacon in the pan. “Sometimes, especially since both Killian and I are both Protectors back in Ireland. But his aunt and uncle spoil him, as do his grandparents—even his step-granddad.”

She fed the tiny one more food before asking, “You had a frenzy when you conceived him?”

Brenna took out the bacon, cleaned the pan a little with paper towels, and cracked some eggs into it. “Mine and Killian’s story is sort of… strange. Another female was his true mate first. But then when his baby dragon came out, kissing him triggered a mate-claim frenzy with my own dragon.”

Percy frowned. “But not his?”

Brenna shook her head. “No, and it gets stranger. Because once his second dragon emerged, my dragon no longer recognized him as our true mate, and the need for a frenzy faded. As I said, ours was a special case. Eventually, we did try for a baby and had our little one. And I certainly cursed Killian during the early months of my pregnancy, when I was ill all the time and vomiting nearly everything I ate. But that was only temporary.”
