But she was starting to think that wasn’t enough, not nearly enough, to truly make her happy.

Percy didn’t know how long she’d been staring into nothingness when she heard a male voice shout, “Percy! Where are you?”

The voice was sort of familiar but not quite. It most definitely wasn’t Bronx’s.

Which sent a rush of relief through her. Well, mostly. A teeny, tiny part of her was disappointed.

Her dragon yawned. What will you do?

You’re not going to convince me one way or the other?

No. Telling you would probably only make you dig in your heels and do the opposite.

Too tired to argue, she stretched out her legs and winced at the pins and needles.

Another voice joined the first—this one, female—and she stood slowly, using the wall to help maintain her balance as blood rushed to her limbs.

If she was going to run, she had to do it now. But no matter how many times she eyed the door, Percy stayed put.

She was so tired of hiding, of guarding herself, and of keeping her distance from everyone and everything. Over the last couple hours, she’d thought more and more about the people of Stonefire’s actions versus what the arseholes inside the facility and orphanage had done.

And with time, the gap widened more and more.

Apart from the very beginning, when Dr. Sid had given her the sedative to calm her dragon so she’d stop hurting herself, everyone had always asked her what she wanted to do, or eat, or even learn.

It would’ve been easy for Bram to order her to do this or that—he had an entire clan of dragon-shifters at his disposal, to do as he wanted.

But he’d never demanded anything. Bloody hell, when she’d actually offered to have sex with people in exchange for help, he’d looked horrified.

Even though she had contributed nothing to the clan beyond a few blood draws for the doctors to test, Bram had given her a place to stay, food to eat, and clothes to wear.

He’d also given her Bronx and Violet.

And just the thought of never seeing either of them again had made her cry while sitting inside this dilapidated cottage, staring at the rain, all by herself.

Alone had been her normal once, but she wasn’t so sure she liked it any longer.

Her dragon asked softly,So you’ll go back?

Time to be honest with both her beast and herself.

Percy was done with running.

Although voicing the words was hard, she still replied,Yes. I don’t know when it happened, but Stonefire is my home now.

The voices drew nearer. Taking a deep breath, Percy made her feet work again and went to the door. She hesitated only a second before shouting, “I’m over here!”

The voices silenced a second before the female one shouted, “Say it again so we can find you!”

“I’m here!”

In less than a minute, a female dragon-shifter she’d seen once or twice—her name was Myla, a young Protector—rushed into the area. On her heels was the head of security, Kai Sutherland.

The ginger-haired female approached her as Kai stayed back. She smiled at Percy. “We’ve been looking for you, Percy. Are you ready to come back to Stonefire? Oh, and before you answer, just know that you’ll be staying with Brenna and Killian for now.”

She frowned. “Why?”

“Well, neither is related to Bronx, so hopefully you won’t feel nervous or cornered.”
