“Well, it wasn’t weird at the time, but his insistence about us moving into this house as quickly as possible was sort of bizarre. He framed it as an engagement gift, and I had hearts in my eyes at the time, so his rush didn’t register with me as odd.”

“And he told you he was an art dealer, right? Did you ever find out anything detailed about his job, or visit him at work?”

“That’s another weird thing.” I bit my bottom lip, trying to wrap my head around how I let Trevor walk all over me like I did. “He was completely and totally tight-lipped about his job, and he didn’t seem to have any family or friends. He really took to all my friends when we went out as a group, but there was never anyone there that knew Trevor specifically.”

“No family,” Gunner pondered. “Does that seem strange to you?”

“It bothered me constantly,” I admitted. “But he would get so uncomfortable when I brought it up, I figured there was some sort of tragedy, or that he was adopted or something.” I laughed sardonically. “You must think my self-awareness is garbage, right? To let all this stuff slip by me.”

“He had you under a spell. There’s no shame in being a victim, Rachel.”

“Victim is a strong word. Let’s see how this plays out before I declare Trevor was heartless, okay?”

Gunner was quiet for a few seconds. “Do you still love him?”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “This conversation has gotten off track.”

He grinned. “You know what? It has. Okay, so you were saying he was nuts about moving into this house as fast as possible, and he seemed to be a complete lone wolf. What else did you notice early on?”

“Nothing except that he wanted me to move away from performing and try being an influencer instead. Not because he didn’t like what I did. More that he hated me going out of town for shoots. As an influencer, I could work from home.”

Running a finger along the rim of my water glass, I tried to think of anything else before Trevor went off the deep end. “I never went into his office. I guess that’s not normal.”

Gunner held up a finger, grabbing his phone from his back pocket. “I think I’m going to need to take some notes here, if you don’t mind. I’m already losing track.”

I sighed sadly. “That’s fine. It really is a lot.”

Chapter Twelve

Gunner

I had only decided to come out to this house in the middle of nowhere because of the information I had been given, and it seemed almost too good to be true when I checked my messages this morning.

The voicemail left on my phone in the middle of the night had shocked me to my core, but it also gave me the perfect alibi to tear apart the house belonging to that asshole, Trevor.

It would have been easier if the house was empty, like I had first thought, but finding out Trevor’s fiancé was still living here was better luck than I could have hoped for. When I had looked over the info my source had given me, details about Rachel had been sparse, so my only hope had been to find her true identity while ransacking the house in Lace Elm. Instead, she gave me her entire identity, and access to the house, all on a silver platter.

The one problem was that, the more I talked to this girl, the more I doubted that she was involved at all. From the moment I laid eyes on her, I was reluctant to treat her roughly, but when she raged at me, fists clenched and standing on her tiptoes, I felt the pull of genuine attraction in my gut.

That was problematic, but I’m a professional, and I can deal with it. What I couldn’t deal with, though, was the fact I couldn’t see an ounce of malice in her dark honey eyes. No subterfuge, no deception, just a frightened woman dead set on wearing a brave face.

I’m not normally one for flights of fancy but standing there, watching the way her mouth moved, images of what I wanted her to do with those lips tumbled rapidly through me, catching me off guard.

I wanted to hear a moan sliding from those lips as she begged me for more.

I would have her on all fours, so that I would have the perfect view of that round ass. She’d be completely naked, looking over her shoulder at me as her long brown hair hung over her shoulder to one side, her tan skin glimmering with a sheen of sweat, her fists tangled in the sheets. She’d push her hips back towards me as I slid my cock into her pussy, feeling her convulse around my length.

I had to swallow a groan as I stiffened in more ways than one, fighting to banish dirty thoughts of this woman from my mind.

Fuck, what was wrong with me? I was supposed to be a professional.

But still, even if she was hot, that didn’t mean she was innocent. But what if she was?

Could Geoff be wrong? My brother-in-law had given me everything he had about Trevor, and therefore, Rachel, but he had been positive she was in on the scheme. He was sure Trevor had planned to flee the country for a few weeks, leaving the artifact with Rachel, until the heat died down. He told me his business partner had multiple identities he could take on at any given time, but the only hiccup was the girl.

There was no way even the most loyal girlfriend would go along with taking on a fake identity and hiding out cross-country if she hadn’t been in on the scheme from the beginning.

Against all odds, though, I was really starting to believe Rachel was innocent, and it wasn’t just because of how she put every masculine urge in me on high alert the moment she opened the fucking front door.
