PROLOGUE

RIDGE

“I,Ridge Foster, solemnly swear to keep the secrets, oaths, and promises of The Society. To protect our antiquity and to abide by all rules. I understand that failure to do so will result in my abolishment, never to enter The Blue Bloods’ Society again.”

It’s the quarter meeting for our chapter, and assignments are being handed out to the male members who have graduated from Boulder Cove Academy.

The President of our chapter nods, a smug grin on his face as if he’s expecting me to fail at whatever assignment is handed over. “Thank you, Mr. Foster. I trust you won’t let us down.”

I pick up the small notebook with my name engraved on the front, then I make my way toward the exit.

As soon as I’m out of the meeting room—and in another less tense one—I flip back the black hood of my robe and release all the pent-up air in my lungs.

That shit never gets easier.

Anxiety courses through my veins as I open the notebook and read the first page.

Investigate the death of Sebastian Saint, our former state governor. Report all findings to The Elders.

That’s it? That’s all I’ve got to go on?

With only a pen and a mini notepad in my hand, my mission has begun. No backyard training. No clues as to what I’m searching for. We’re sent out into the world with only our assignment and the hope that we don’t fail.

I read the task again, hoping that something stands out. Anything I can use as a starting point because I’ve got fucking nothing.

I flip the cover up on the notepad, desperate for more clues, because I will fail if this is all I’ve got. For the last two years, I’ve had simple assignments. Track down a couple guys who needed to be brought in for questioning. Deliver a mysterious box. Of course, I was an underclassman at Boulder Cove University. I heard they get harder as you move up, but I guess I was expecting a little more direction.

Fuck it. I can do this.

Pulling out my phone, I type out a detailed email to one of The Blue Bloods—our Society—confidants at the Boulder Cove police department. I suck with words, so I go with something simple.

Send me everything you have on the death of Sebastian Saint.

Of course, I’ll get the corrupt files, considering his death was deemed a suicide. That’s only because that’s what The Elders wanted. Any attention given to The Society is unwelcome, and it’s something we avoid at all costs. We make our own rules and outside law enforcement can’t touch us. It’s one of the many perks of being a Blue Blood.

In the case of Sebastian Saint, and many other members who have lost their lives—justice willneverbe served. At least, not in the way many families would like to see justice served. Instead, we handle everything on our own, and my gut tells me Sebastian’s murder was an inside job. The Elders must agree; otherwise, they wouldn’t still be investigating.

May the Lord have mercy on the soul who was behind his death.

I slump in a chair of another room, beside my best friend, Maddox.

“What did you get?” he asks, peering over the notepad as I tap the pen to the table.

I hold it up, showing him my assignment. We’re not supposed to share this information with a single soul. As a matter of fact, I just took an oath not to do so. Our assigned tasks are done in complete confidence. However, Maddox, Lev, and I have been known to break the rules because of the tight bond we share.

“Fuck, man,” Maddox says. “You’re like a real detective with that shit.”

“Yeah.” I smirk. “A crooked detective who is ready to wreak havoc on this case.”

“Even better. Weed out those members who have fucked us all. Only then will we, the good ones, truly reign.”

“What about you? Do you finally get to do something valuable with your time, instead of learning and creeping on the female students?”

“Nope,” he quips, balancing his chair on two legs. “Same as every other year.”

“The fuck?”

He holds up his own notepad, showing me the front page.Watch the Kappa Rho members. Report any malicious acts to The Elders.
