I rub my cheek, still feeling the sting of her slap. “It was a misunderstanding. I need to talk to her.” I attempt to follow Riley, but Maddox grabs me by the collar of my jacket.

“You need to give her some time to cool off. If you go after her now, you’re just gonna make things worse.”

“Fuck!” I shout, the sound echoing down the empty hall.

“Let me talk to her for you. See where her head is at.”

“No,” I say abruptly. “Stay away from her.”

The words fly out of my mouth with no thought process behind them, but when I clear my head, it starts to make sense. “Okay,” I say, correcting myself, “find out how pissed she is. And keep an eye on her for me. I have some shit to take care of.”

His response is just a nod, so I leave him there, walking as fast as I can to get away from this space. A space that will always be a constant reminder of what just happened.

Riley thinks she can be a little tease, huh? She wants to play? Well, I’m fucking ready to play.

CHAPTER13

RILEY

I still can’t getover how aggressive Ridge was yesterday. A kiss is one thing, but the look in his eyes and the tight hold he had on me… It’s as if he wanted to prove he could do whatever he wanted with my body. Every time I pushed him away, he pulled me right back in, like I was the crazy one.

I haven’t told Scar, or anyone for that matter. No one will understand why I even let him get as close to me as I do. I don’t even understand it. It’s over, though. I meant it when I told him to stay away from me.

You’re darkness and doom.

You shy away from sanity.

My heart jumped and skipped for you.

But only momentarily.

I saw your true colors.

Dark gray and black.

Now you can take your obsession.

And shove it up your ass.

So emo, but so true. I can’t believe there was ever a part of me that thought I could be attracted to a guy like Ridge.

“Everything okay?” I jolt at the voice over my shoulder. Not just any voice, it’s Maddox.

“Yeah,” I tell him, closing my notebook and sliding the pen down the coil binding, reminding me to keep looking for the matching pen that disappeared.

Maddox pulls out the chair beside me in the student center, gives it a turn, and sits down on it with the back of the chair between his legs. “You sure about that?”

“Look,” I tell him, “if this is about yesterday with Ridge, I told you when you chased me down that I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Nah. This is about you, and right now, you seem stressed.”

“I am stressed. Your friend is a damn lunatic. What makes him think it’s okay to stalk me like this?” I look past Maddox at Ridge, who’s literally watching me at this very moment. “It’s getting creepy as hell.” I gather up my stuff in frustration then stuff it in my bag. My leg flings over the stool I was on and I get up. “You’re welcome to come with me if you want, but I have to get the hell away from him.”

Maddox steals a glance at Ridge before standing up. “Coffee shop by Delta Chi?”

“Yesss,” I gush. “Coffee sounds amazing right about now.”

I don’t even give Ridge the satisfaction of another look as I head to the door with Maddox. But when a loud crash has me grabbing Maddox’s arm, I’m certain Ridge is watching me walk away. The sound of footsteps scattering has me sweeping the area where Ridge was sitting, and sure enough, he’s on his feet with his chair tipped over beside him.
