“You’re…” I can’t even think. I’m too stunned. “What the hell is the matter with you?”

He grins devilishly, not a care in the world about the unwanted attention pinned to us.

The barista returns with my coffee and I jerk my hand away quickly before snatching it off the counter.

I have to get out of here.

My body can barely keep up with my feet as I hurry to the door. Once I’m out, I don’t stop until I’m far enough away from him.

It’s apparent Maddox isn’t coming back.Ugh!Do I have ‘stank pussy’ tattooed on my forehead or something? Why the hell am I so resistible to normal guys?

Earlier this week, Scar mentioned a party at the hot springs. Didn’t plan on going. But my plans just changed. I need to find myself a guy, sothis oneleaves me the hell alone.

CHAPTER14

MADDOX

Sittingon the wall in front of the main campus building, I’m staring out at the high-top mountains in the distance. A few peaks are already snow-covered, but down here, it’s all green. Some might argue that it’s not really snow but clouds over the top of them. Goes to show that not everything is as it seems, but there is always an answer. There is always a right one and a wrong one. Right? Or am I wrong?

Forget about the fucking mountains.

Think, Maddox!

An hour ago, I was walking with Riley and everything was great. I was enjoying her company. Even felt a little rush of giddiness inside that I wasn’t planning to explore because of Ridge. The next minute, everything changed. Then I stood her up because I can’t face her until I know what the fuck I plan to do.

I grab my phone beside me and re-read the messages from my dad for the third time, just to make sure I didn’t miss something that proves it can’t be true.

Dad: Foul play on the victims was confirmed. Evidence was found at the second site and handed over to us by our detective on the inside. We’re certain it’s a member. Maybe even more than one.

Me: Damn. So those guys were murdered? Who are the suspects?

Dad: Based on the evidence handed over? Samson Cross’s daughter. Riley Cross. She’s a student there. I need you to keep a close eye on her, Maddox. Report to me with any wrongdoings or anything suspicious. She’s also one of the students being investigated by The Sleuths in the governor’s death. Her friends might be involved, too.

Me: No way! Where the hell are you getting this information? I’m gonna call you. This doesn’t make any sense.

Dad: I’m on a job right now. Can’t talk. The evidence is damning. They found a stainless-steel pen in the ash and rubble with her name engraved on it.

Me: Okay. Well, someone might’ve borrowed it or set her up.

Dad: Too much of a coincidence with The Society’s ongoing investigation into the governor’s death. My gut tells me she’s involved. These are things you need to learn as a Guardian, Maddox. Trust your instincts. Things aren’t always what they seem, but there is always an answer. That pen didn’t get placed there after the fact. It landed while the fire was still hot.

Me: You’re sure about this? You really think it’s her?

Dad: I’d bet my life on it.

Me: Tell me everything you know about her. Everything!

Dad: You know I can’t tell you everything, son.

Me: Then tell me everything you can.

Dad: She’s a Guardian, Maddox. That’s why it’s imperative this doesn’t get out. If Samson Cross caught wind of any of this, he’d raise hell. We can’t risk him trying to cover it up too fast.

I’ve known Riley was a Guardian, but my father telling me so proves just how serious this is to him. He’d never let such valuable information slip.

Me: So it will be covered up, regardless?

Dad: From law enforcement? Yes. From the other Elders? Not likely. I’ll be working this case day and night. I expect you to do the same from your side of things. I’ll be in touch.
