“Was the curtain closed by any chance?”

Now that I think about it, it was closed. As soon as I woke up, I changed quickly and went to the guys' dorm to get Scar, so we could have coffee.

“And they haven’t said who it is?” I ask her, anxious to know who died but also completely terrified that it might be someone we know.

“I…I don’t know. A couple names were tossed around while I was weaving through the crowd around the body. Staff was holding everyone back. One person said Archer Redwig. Another said Zeke Martin. Could be anyone.”

“And you’ve talked with Crew, Jagger, and Neo?”

She nods. “Yeah. They’re fine. Jagger told me to stay put and that he was on his way to find me. I would have called, but I knew you lost your phone. I take it you haven’t found it yet?”

“No.”

She takes my hand in hers, squeezing it tightly. “Once things calm down, we’ll bring the guys and go look for it.”

A quick glance behind me proves that Ridge is still hot on my trail. I turn back around and draw in a deep breath. “He said it wasn’t him.”

“Who said what?”

“Ridge. He said he didn’t come into my room last night.”

“And you believe him?”

“He called me baby girl. The guy from last night, I mean. He called me baby girl. Ridge always calls me Angel.”

“So the lunatic has many nicknames for you. You don't seriously think he’d tell you the truth, do you?” She mocks him in a masculine voice, “No, Angel. I didn’t sneak into your room and drug you just so I could finger you.”

“It’s just so out of character for Ridge. He might be crazy, but this isn’t his style.”

Scar will always only see the worst in Ridge because it’s the only thing I’ve given her to go on.

I look over my shoulder again, catching his stare.

But I see beyond that deranged look in his eye. I see someone who would truly go to the ends of the earth for me.

“There he is,” Scar says, nodding toward the stretcher with a black blanket draped over the body.

I cover my mouth with my hand and pinch my eyes shut, unable to look. It’s all too familiar. Memories of the night the governor died flood my mind. Seeing him like that. Dead.

Jagger and Crew come rushing toward us and Scar meets them halfway. Then, two arms wrap around me from behind, pulling me close. I don’t even have to look up to see that it’s Ridge. I know it’s him.

I push him away, not willing to get close to this guy. I don’t trust him and I’m not sure I ever will.

Two of the public safety officers from campus approach Scar, and I step away from Ridge. Though, he never leaves my side.

Scar, Jagger, and Crew all look at me, along with the officers. There’s a brief moment where everyone is mute. No one says anything. Then, they all move toward me.

“Riley Cross?” one of the officers asks, and I nod. “We’re gonna need to have a few words with you.”

My heart drops into my stomach and my legs go weak. I look at Scar, who’s just as shocked as I am.

“What is this all about?”

“Both of you,” he points from me to Scar, “come with me.”

Given no choice, Scar and I follow.

Ridge grabs my arm, jerking me back. “Don’t fucking listen to him. You’re not going anywhere.”
