“Let go of me!” It’s still surreal hearing him talk, but I can’t focus on that right now. Ridge needs to back off before he makes matters worse.

“Sir. You need to step back,” the officer says to Ridge. “This is not your concern.”

“Like hell it’s not,” Ridge snaps back. He levels his body with mine, hands on my shoulders. “You don’t have to do this.”

I lick my lips, thoughts running rampant as I jerk from his touch. “I have nothing to hide. Can you say the same?”

The officer opens the back door of his car as Scar and I approach it. The flashing lights all around make my head spin faster than it did last night. “You’re welcome to have a seat inside, or you can stand.”

I hesitate, looking at Scar, then Ridge. “Do…do we need a lawyer for this?” Tears pool in my eyes and I can’t help but wonder if they think one of us had something to do with this.

“No,” Crew says. “I’ll call my dad. Don’t answer anything this guy asks you.”

“But we didn't do anything wrong.”

“Doesn’t matter,” Neo cuts in. “There’s always someone who will try and twist your narrative to make you appear guilty.”

“Guilty?” I sob. Full of tears and panic. “I’m not guilty of anything.”

“We’re not accusing you girls of anything. We’re talking to all the girls with windows on the east side of the hall.” He looks at the guys, as if they’re all overreacting. “No need to call anyone’s parents. They’re not in any trouble.”

Relief washes over me and I release all the pent-up air I’ve been holding in.This is just routine. We’re not in any trouble. It’s my own guilty conscience getting the better of me. After being questioned by police for the death of the governor, even the lights alone send me into a full-blown panic.

“Listen, Ry,” Scar pulls me away and whispers, “things are different here. We don’t exist in the laws of the real world. Whatever happened, is not what these officers will be led to believe. Always remember, The Elders have people on the inside who are bigger than any situation we might encounter.”

She’s right. For once, I’m grateful for the protection we have from The Society. I don’t know what happened to the guy who died, but regardless, if foul play was involved, The Elders would never let the Blue Blood name be tarnished by convicting one of our own. They’d kill them first.

The thought sends chills down my spine.

Scar slides in the back seat of the patrol car and I join her. With the door ajar, and Ridge and Scar’s guys lingering outside, I whisper, “What if the guy who fell is the one who came into my room last night?”

Scar shakes her head. “It was Ridge, babe. He’s playing you. Don’t let him get in your head like this.”

Something in my gut tells me Scar is wrong. I don’t think it was Ridge. And now, I have this dreadful feeling it may have been the guy who potentially flew out of our window.

“Holy fuck,” Maddox mutters, appearing out of nowhere. “Zeke fucking Martin committed suicide.”

My hand flies to my mouth, eyes wide on Scar. “It’s Zeke? Zeke who made a pass at me. Zeke who Ridge threatened in class.”

“Calm down, Ry. It could all just be a coincidence.” I look at Ridge dumbfoundedly. Completely fucking shook. Scar follows my line of sight. “Unless you think…”

“No. He wouldn’t.”

Her shoulders rise then fall abruptly. “You said it yourself that you barely know him and his friends.”

“Murder, Scar. Really?” I shake my head. “This isn’t true crime. There’s no way. Besides, you heard Maddox. They said it was a suicide.”

“They? Or The Elders? There’s a big difference.”

I watch keenly as Ridge jerks Maddox by the collar of his shirt, lugging him off to the side. I can’t hear what they’re saying, but every couple seconds, one or both of them glances in my direction.

The same officer who brought us over here approaches Maddox and Ridge. With a pen, he points to the marks on Ridge’s face then begins writing something down.

A few minutes later, the officer comes over to us, crouched down by the door with a notepad in his hand and a pen pressed to it. “Which floor and room do you girls stay in?”

“Umm. Second floor,” I tell him. “Room 213.”

“And have either of you had any encounters with Zeke Martin over the last twenty-four hours?”
