“That would definitely be helpful, but what about Zeke?”

“Zeke practically raped you, Ry. Even if in some off chance they did pin you with his death, or murder, or whatever the fuck happened to him, the guy drugged you and took advantage of your body.”

“But no one can know that. I don’t want that kind of attention, Scar.”

“Babe. You need to speak the fuck up. Zeke can’t hurt you again, but there are a million other Zekes out there. One voice can make waves.”

Scar has a point, but I’m not as strong as she is. I can’t handle the emotional repercussions.

“We’ll see if it comes to that. Until then, you’ll talk to Neo?”

She nods. “Of course. I will.”

I fall into her arms and she holds me tight while the worries of the day slip away. Until one more comes to mind.

“Hey, Scar,” I mutter into the sleeve of her hoodie. “There’s one more thing.”

I can feel the tension rise in her chest as her shoulders lift. “What the fuck, Ry. You’re like a Sunday morning newspaper today. All depressing and shit.”

“I may or may not have made plans for tomorrow night.” I sit up, lips tight, and the tendons in my neck exposed. “I agreed to wrestle Melody Higgins in a mud pit at Delta Chi.”

Scar falls back on the bed, her body limp. “Riley Cross, what am I going to do with you?”

I lean over her with a cheesy grin. “Just love me like you always do.”

CHAPTER26

RILEY

Last year,if someone would have told me I’d be preparing to roll around in a mud pit with Melody, I’d keel over with laughter.

Why? Because I don’t like getting dirty, that’s why.

Oh, and how about the fact that hundreds of students are gathered around the pit. Drinks in hand. They’re even passing money around and placing bets on who will win.

“Two hundred on the short one,” one guy says as he passes a wad of cash to a guy with a manila envelope.

“Two. Hundred. Dollars?” I mutter to Scar. “On me?” My eyes are ready to pop out of their sockets. “This is fucking insane.”

I tug down my black sports bra, trying to cover the skin still showing of my stomach. But that’s not how sports bras work and there’s nothing discreet in what I’ve got on. Matching black boy shorts and a bra. That’s it. Nothing more and nothing less. No panties. No bra under the bra. And it’s only fifty-five damn degrees out.

Yep. I’ve officially lost my mind.

“You’ve got this, Ry.”

“Says the girl who wanted to slap me for agreeing to this.”

“Well, now that you have, you can’t back out. Melody will never let you live it down.”

I find my corner near the pit. It’s the size of a large pool filled with mud. If I had to guess, I’d say it’s at least calf-deep. There’s a wooden sign standing on a couple two-by-fours that says,Delta Chi Mud Pit. Let’s Get Dirty.

My nerves are at an all-time high when I spot Melody on the other side. If I thought I was underdressed, I was wrong. She’s wearing a two-piece bikini, white at that, and the bottoms are a thong. Her hair is down, which I may use to my advantage, if it’s allowed.Shit.I don't even know the rules here.“What do I do?” I ask Scar. “I’ve never done this. Do I hit her?”

Scar laughs. “You do whatever the hell it takes. Melody is a pansy. You’re badass. Keep that in mind. She might be taller than you, but you’ve got a good fifteen pounds on her. Just stay low and go for her waist.”

I feel like one of those fighters getting a pep talk before a big match. Only, I don’t get a mouthpiece and I have no prior training.

My eyes dance around the crowd from face to face. Tall flames dance in the distance, and I’m so jealous of the people surrounding the fire. I shiver, my nipples ready to slice through the cotton fabric of my bra. “There are so many people, Scar.” She slaps my ass really fucking hard and I wince. “What the hell!”
