A knock at the door has us looking at each other in the mirror. “Who could that be?” I ask her.

“No clue. My guys are at the gym, so it must be one of yours.”

My eyes roll. “I don’t have any guys, Scar.”

“Yeah.” She snaps the small rubber band at the end of my hair. “You do. Whether you want to admit it or not.”

She walks to the door, shaking her ass to the beat of the music, and I bark out a laugh.

When she pulls open the door and Maddox is standing there, the cheerful expression drops suddenly from my face.

Scar holds the door, waving me toward him. “Seems I was right.”

Getting off the vanity stool, I cross the room. “What are you doing here?”

“Can we talk?”

I look at Scar, seeking approval, since this was supposed to be abestie nightfor just us. She sighs heavily, then nods. “Go ahead.”

In a pair of gray sweatpants and a tee shirt, with bare feet, I go into the hall and close the door behind me.

“Everything okay?”

“Yeah.” Maddox scratches the back of head before retracting his one-word statement. “Actually…no.” He grabs my face and pulls my mouth to his in an unexpected yet searing kiss.

Completely caught off guard, I’m not sure how to react. Pull away? Kiss him back?

I go for the latter and I have no regrets. My hands find his waist and I hold him tight while our mouths part, and my tongue slides in, tangling with his.

His warm lips open and close around mine, tingles of desire rippling through me. In an instant, Maddox pushes me against the wall, his heated body flush with mine.

I have no idea where this is coming from, but I hope it’s not a fluke. Maddox said we could only be friends, so what the hell is going on?

Our mouths close, and he steps back, breaking the kiss but still holding my face in his palms. Before he can say anything, I blurt out, “What was that for?”

His mouth tugs up in a grin. “Just wanted to see if you were still a good kisser.”

“And?” I grin back, warmth assaulting my belly.

“Even better than last time.”

He pecks my mouth again, then runs his hands down my arms, watching his movements. “I fucked up, Riley. I can’t be your friend. Not when I desperately want to be so much more.”

“But…Ridge?”

“Told me to come here. He’s fucking insane, but his heart is gold.”

I’m speechless. I can’t believe Ridge would encourage Maddox to pursue something with me.

“So he’s moving on?”

“No,” Maddox shakes his head, “not even a little bit. But he’s not standing in our way. At least, not for now.”

I’m not sure what that means, but I’ll take it…for now. I’ll take all I can get from Maddox.

Dropping his hands, he nods to the floor before sitting down. His knees bend with his wrists draped over them. “There’s also something else.”

“Oh boy.” I sit down beside him. “What now?”
