Page 28 of He Loves Me Not

It’s none of my business, but I had to ask. It only happens when he is nervous, and not all the time. He looks embarrassed, and I want to kick myself for being nosey. He stares down at the plastic table, and then his eyes find mine.

“I-It––” He takes a deep breath and continues. “It started when I turned fifteen. It just happened.”

“Oh.” I swallow the mashed potatoes, not really tasting them. “Why do you sit alone and not with anyone?”

“I sit with you.”

Is he flirting with me? I grin, and for the first time he smiles. It’s nice. He has straight teeth, and his hair falls over his left brow. It doesn’t give me flutters in my stomach like it would from a guy you find hot and want to get his attention and you are finally getting it. It’s more friendly than anything.

“Why don’t you play sports? Have a girlfriend? You must get bored.”

“I draw.”

“Oh. Maybe you can show me sometime.”

He smiles. “Sure. D-Do you want to go out sometime?” he asks. “I-I know I’m not your type, but as f-friends.”

Is he flirting with me? I wear a hoodie every day to school. I don’t wear makeup and I’m made fun of regularly. He couldn’t possibly find me attractive.

“How do you know my type? What is my type?”

He looks up nervously and then his eyes move past me. I have no idea what or who he is looking at, but I don’t want to turn around.

Patrick’s eyes land back on mine. “I-I thought maybe someone like Ky is more your type, or maybe one of the football players.”

I snort, shaking my head. “Absolutely not. They think I’m a freak and they make fun of me.”

“But you never said they were ugly or found them unattractive,” he volleys back.

“I don’t need to compliment them. I still haven’t been able to get past their winning personalities to even get a good look.”

Patrick starts laughing, like a full-on belly laugh.

I would never admit I found Ky remotely attractive. The memory of him and how close he was to my skin that night at the party is imprinted in my memory, but then his words to me earlier in class tells me that he isn’t who I thought he was. The fact that he slept with Roxy—and then Jen—tarnished my feelings for him.

“Would you look at that? Patty has a grin on his face.” Ky’s voice has me looking up to my right.

“Fuck off, Ky.”

He chuckles. “Not until he tells me why he is grinning like an idiot. He stares over at me from across the cafeteria, and then is laughing while lost in conversation with the likes of you. So I’m curious as to what this little bitch is saying about me.”

“I said, fuck off, Ky. Leave him alone.” He leans close to my ear, and I watch as Patrick gives him a glare but doesn’t move. “Or what?”

Turning my head, Ky’s lips are close to my cheek. If I move one centimeter, I would be able to feel if his lips are firm or soft. If they are warm or cold. The tension between us builds like an invisible band, stretching and stretching until it’s about to snap. His dark eyes trace my lips, and my heart is pounding in my ears. I can hear ringing as all the voices fade, and it’s just us. Why? Why is he such an ass?

“Why don’t you tell him the truth?”

My eyes widen. He can’t mean about our past. “What truth?”

“The truth that you want me. Since the first time you laid eyes on me, you have wanted me.” He nudges his head slightly. “Go on. Tell him the truth.”

He is so full of it. Full of himself. Before I would admit to anyone that I find him attractive, or that he makes me go crazy, I’d rather eat the block of cheese they left in my locker.

Having made my decision, I look over at Patrick and I answer his earlier question before we were so rudely interrupted. “Yes, Patrick, I’ll go out with you.”

Patrick’s eyes widen and he looks at Ky. I feel Ky tense, but I don’t care. Patrick has been the only person who has been nice to me besides Abby. I’m done with Ky and his shit.

My eyes meet Ky’s pitch black eyes and I notice his jaw is hard. He takes a deep swallow, and I could tell me accepting to go out with Patrick bothers him more than he’ll admit. “I think it is best you head back to your table, your girlfriend is waiting. Maybe go for round two in the lab. That’s all she seems to remember when it comes to you, am I right?”
