Page 32 of He Loves Me Not

Rubi: Because the last guy you saw hurting me can’t wipe his ass.

Cesar: That is what he gets for touching my girl.

I close my eyes, willing the memory to not pop up as I pocket my phone in my hoodie. Hoping that flashback stays in the past, buried with the rest.

“Hey, are you going to the game after school?” Abby asks, popping up out of nowhere behind my open locker door. She is always so bubbly and friendly.

I look around and notice the cheerleaders wearing their uniforms and the dancers of the band wearing theirs, walking up and down the halls. I also notice some of the football players wearing their letterman jackets. Now that I think about it, Tyler was wearing his in the kitchen when he was showing me how the coffee machine worked.

“I’m not sure. I’ve never been to one before. I have seen them on TV and I understand the game somewhat, but not entirely.” I have also never seen Tyler practice after school, or seen him play. I guess it would be nice to see him play. I shrug my shoulders. “Yeah, why not.”

“Awesome. It will be so much fun. I’ll wait for you after school and we can go together.”

“Okay.”

***

The bell rings and I make it out of school and Abby is waiting for me in the parking lot. I sent Tyler a text telling him I was catching a ride with Abby to go to the game. He sent me a smiling face emoji with a thumbs up. I guess he liked the idea of me going to watch him play.

Her car lights flash, signaling that she unlocked her car. She drives this cute little red Mini Cooper. It kind of fits her bubbly personality. I open the door and slide in the small car.

“It’s nothing fancy like what the other kids at this school drive, but I like it,” she says in defense.

“I was thinking that it’s cute and matches your personality. I think the other kids buy cars because they care too much about what others think.”

“Except Tyler. He doesn’t care what anyone thinks.”

I guess she was right with the way he has been acting toward me now. He is definitely nicer to me. I turn my head and wait until she looks forward after backing out.

“You like him, don’t you?”

“Who?” she asks, playing dumb. It is so obvious she has a thing for my half-brother. It is always Tyler this and Tyler that.

“Tyler.”

Her cheeks flush and I knew I was right. “Don’t tell him, please,” she says in a pleading voice.

“Of course not. It’s not my business, but I think if you don’t want him to find out. Don’t defend him so much unless it’s absolutely necessary. Oh, and stop watching him every time he walks in a room.”

“Is it that obvious?”

I nod. “Yeah, but the fact you have known him for a while doesn’t make it blatantly obvious.”

“Okay. I don’t want him to know because I’m younger and his best friend’s sister, so that makes me a no-go. It would be cliché. Younger sister has a thing for brother’s best friend, right?”

I think about how that would be the same thing if Ky was different toward me, but then again, Tyler is my half-brother, and I have only known him about a month. I don’t think that counts.

“I could say the same for Ky. It’s the opposite.”

“What?”

What is she talking about?

“The way he looks at you. I’m not the only one who has noticed. He watches you. My brother says he gets in a snippy mood when he sees you talking to Patrick at lunch. Conner teased him about it, and he got angry. He also seems to be hanging around Jen a lot. He never did that before. I was confused at first, but I think Ky secretly likes you and is using Jen as a distraction.”

“Funny, he says the exact opposite. He thinks I’m dirt on his shoe and he tells me I’m nasty and I smell.”

She bursts out laughing. “You don’t smell, and you are not nasty. He is just being a stupid idiot. He has a bad temper since his mother left him and his dad when he was eleven, I think. I don’t think he ever got over it, and I think it’s why he doesn’t want a girlfriend.”
