“Woah, ladies.” Conner interrupts. “Damn.”

Ky walks around Conner. “Go home, Jen.”

Her eyes widen. “I thought you were taking me to the party after the game. I don’t have a ride,” she whines.

My eyes drift to Ky, but he doesn’t meet them before responding, “Then let’s leave.”

It feels like I got punched in the gut. I guess the memory couldn’t last another hour. I almost declined Patrick’s invitation, making up an excuse, but now I’m happy I didn’t. After the game ended, I was about to push send but I changed my mind.

Jen gives me a sly look before walking up to Ky and placing her hand flat on his chest. He studies her hand, but doesn’t remove it. His eyes flick up, aiming directly at me for a moment, but I can’t read his blank expression. As soon as his black eyes land on mine, he turns away and I try to hide my irritation. An hour ago, he was all over me. I was stupid and I caved.

“Hey, are you okay, Rubiana?” Tyler asks, getting Ky’s attention, but I look away.

“I’m good.”

“Do you need a ride, or are you riding with Abby?” he asks.

“I’m waiting for someone.”

Tyler’s eyebrows rise and he looks around, but doesn’t see anyone he knows would be taking me anywhere. Chris casts awhy didn’t you mention anything to melook at Abby.

Nicole is busy shooting daggers over at Jen, and Conner slaps his teammate on his shoulder. “This is gonna be good,” Conner says, looking at Ky, but my gaze remains on Tyler.

My phone vibrates in my jeans pocket, and I ‘m relieved that I can distract myself by removing my phone and opening the alert to the text.

Patrick: I’m here but I don’t want to get out of the car.

Rubi: Why?

Patrick: I want to keep on living, Rubi. Ky and your brother will kill me. Look to your left at the car with the parking lights on.

Shit. I forgot about that. My eyes scan the parking lot, and parked in the back with the lights on is a black Camaro.

Rubi: Black Camaro?

Patrick: Yeah.

Rubi: Give me a sec.

Pocketing my phone, I watch as Ky slides in the driver’s side while Jen opens the door in a huff. Woah! What did I miss? She gets in the car, but Ky’s windows are tinted, so I can’t see inside.

“Is your ride here? Tyler asks.

I tear my gaze away from Ky’s BMW and look up at Tyler. He has his arms crossed with the strap of his bag on his shoulder waiting for an answer. I smile inwardly because for the past couple of weeks, he has been acting like a big brother. I’m not sure if he remembers that I’m older than him.

“My ride is already here. I’ll meet you at the party.”

He pinches his brow when he sees me take off across the parking lot toward the Camaro.

“Do you know where it is?” he calls out.

I hold up my hand without turning around. “I’ll be there. Don’t worry, I won’t disappear.”

If he only knew how appealing that sounds, but then I have my cat Hope to think about.

I reach the Camaro and I can hear the doors unlock from the passenger side. I pull the handle to open the door and slide inside. I’m greeted with a scared shitless Patrick looking around like someone is out to get him, and a whole lot of cologne.

“Hey.”
