He rubs his lips together and caresses my cheek with the backs of his fingers and grins. “I love that you protect me,nena.” He gives me a tight hug and I place my forehead against his chest, breathing in his cologne. “You’re gorgeous. Everything about you is phenomenal, and I would kill anyone who hurts you, my angel. If I were a different man, I would never let you go. I want a better life for you, and you need to be where you are right now. It’s safer than out here and I can’t offer you what you deserve, Rubi. I wish I could.”

“But you make me feel safe,” I say on a sob.

He pulls away and lifts my chin with his finger so I can meet his eyes. “I wouldn’t be able to keep you safe and give you all the beautiful things you deserve. You should never settle for less, Rubi. If someone doesn’t show you that you are worth everything and can give you everything that you want, then they aren’t good enough for you. I can’t give up what I do for you, Rubi. I can’t.”

He reaches behind me, and it’s a bag with I’m guessing are the drugs they came to get. He holds it in front of me so I can take it. “Tell them no meth, cocaine, or heroin. I won’t put that shit around you out of respect.”

I nod. “Okay.”

He places a soft kiss near my mouth. “I think you should go back before he jumps out of the fancy truck like Jet Li and wants to kick my ass.” He says the last part on a chuckle.

“I’ll call you.”

“I’ll always answer you, nena. Vaya con Dios.”

He always tells me to go with God. I miss him.

When I reach the truck, Chris opens the back passenger door and I step up and lift myself to get inside. Once I’m seated and the door is closed, all their eyes are on me. I toss the package on the center console. “He says no meth, cocaine, or heroin.”

“How do you know him? He is the leader of the most dangerous gang in West Park. He’s a drug dealer, Rubiana,” Tyler says sternly.

“Is he your boyfriend?” Ky asks.

“I know him from the foster system.”

“I bet you know him a little more than that,” Ky snaps.

I shake my head. “No. He just looked out for me. Not all the kids in the foster system are nice.”

“I wonder what you did to get the most dangerous one to look out for you,” Ky mocks.

What is his problem? I got him the shit they wanted. He wasn’t going to give it to them if it weren’t for me.

“We got the shit and I have to thank you, Rubi. I need the weed. It is how I cope with school, football, and the pressure of graduating,” Chris says.

Gee, you have it so bad. I want to tell Chris that he doesn’t know what it is to live with pressure, but I don’t. It’s not worth it.

“Poor guy, it must be awful being you,” I say sarcastically.

Rubi

I CLOSE MYlocker with a slam. Whore written across it vertically, and I want to punch whoever did it in their face. Really? I’m a whore now.

I have been hearing whispers about me being at the party, and that I was seen entering one of the bedrooms. I can’t lie and say I didn’t go in because I did. What gets me on edge is that no one is talking about Jen and Nicole or even Ky. I guess anything that I can be linked to would be taken out of proportion and would make me out to be this nasty person with all the labels. Street rat, scum, trash, dirty, I stink, freak, and now whore. They are all toddlers, I swear.

I’m walking toward the cafeteria when I’m pushed into a dark alcove, and then I’m shoved inside a room and the door slams shut. I open my mouth to scream when a hand clamps over my mouth and pushed up against a wall. My eyes are trying to adjust in the dark, and when I can refocus, my eyes land on hard black eyes.

“Did you fuck him?”

What? Who is he talking about? Then it dawns on me. Cesar. He is asking if I fucked Cesar. Should I lie or should I tell him the truth?

I manage to push my face away from his hand and take a deep breath. “What the fuck is wrong with you, Ky, huh? Why do you care?”

“Did you?” he asks through clenched teeth. “Did you fuck him?” he asks again.

I push against his hard chest, but it feels like I’m pushing against a concrete wall. He won’t move. He won’t budge.

“I’ll tell you if you tell me who wrote whore on my locker and is spreading rumors about me at the party.” Nothing. I’m met with silence.
