“By who?” she chuckled easily, loving the way he had his hands laced together at her lower back, just holding her close.

“By everyone who has ever met me… I mean, the clerk at the grocery store, my friends, the florist in Tyler, the gas station attendant, and the list goes on and on,” he bragged, before winking at her. “I’m kidding.”

“I know,Sprinkles.”

“You called?” he chimed in immediately, setting them both to laughing once more, before he hugged her once more. She treasured the feeling of peace stealing within her soul at just being close to someone she could share with – and unexpectedly was coming to care about as her friend.

“You should probably get home soon – and I should probably try to get a little sleep before tomorrow’s mess. I’ve got four layovers on my way back to Afghanistan – so I will try to text or call if I have reception or a moment of privacy.”

She nodded, her head tucked under his chin as he held her close.

“I already miss you…” he breathed.

“Same here,” she admitted.

“I will write as soon as I get settled back in – and when I come back? We’ll look at our rules again and formalize this, if we are ready to tell the world about our little secret.”

“It’s going to be okay, right?” she said fearfully, already knowing he was creeping his way into her heart.

“We are going to be fine – I promise, bunny.”

“Hush,Sprinkles…” she teased.

“I’m your favorite,” he said pertly, but his voice was thick and full of emotion, kissing the top of her head. “Go ahead and get in the car – and call me when you get home, okay?”

“I promise.”

“I’ll see you soon,” he said simply, brushing a soft kiss against her forehead – and then her lips, before nodding and backing away.

RICOCHET

Ghazni, Afghanistan

Paradox was exceedingly quiet. He would open his mouth for a moment, start to speak, and then get really quiet on the plane. Truthfully, Killian was glad they were going to be landing soon, because both men had run out of stuff to talk about long ago.

“So, you really married that woman?” Paradox said suddenly, without any warning.

“Destiny? Yeah – and please, don’t say a thing. I just need a little bit of time before I go and tell everyone.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s new… and why are you asking?”

“How long have you known… never mind,” Paradox uttered, crossing his arms and glaring at the seatback before him on the plane like it had offended him.

“How long have I known what?”

“I said never mind…”

“Fine.”

“Caleb is two?”

“Caleb? Yeah, I think so – maybe almost three. Why?”

“Nothing.”
