Ten minutes later, she pulled into the dark street near the airfield and saw a lone figure in the shadows just before her headlights landed on him. As she pulled forward, turned and parked, barely shutting off the car, before Killian was already opening her door.

“Sorry it took me a minute, I made a wrong turn and had to…”

Killian pulled her out of the car – and hugged her tightly – the rest of her words forgotten in that moment. She could feel his arms trembling and felt the warmth of his lips on her neck as he dropped featherlight kisses there, making her melt.

“Killian…” she said softly – and he leaned down, hesitating for only a brief moment before leaning towards her, pausing.

“May I…” he breathed, completely disarming her as he gently rubbed his nose against her cheek, nuzzling her. “I know you are scared and there is no explaining any of this – but I really can’t help that I need to, I want…”

“Yes,” she interrupted and heard his sigh right before he brushed his lips against hers tenderly. His hand moved from her back, to cradle her neck, pulling her closer as he leaned in towards her, coaxing and tasting like a man driven.

No one could be this attentive, this sweet and caring… and maybe he was right. Maybe there was no explaining this between them. Maybe it was fate – or destiny, like her name…

She laughed softly against his lips, breaking the kiss, and heard him do the same as he remained close to her, smiling.

“Does this mean since you’ve let me kiss you twice now,” Killian flirted tenderly with her, his thumb stroking her neck softly. “That maybe you might be slightly coming to trust me, my lovely little bunny?”

“You keep calling me that…” she smiled bashfully, looking away.

“All that beautiful golden-brown hair, those eyes, that soft skin, and the way you crinkle that sweet little nose…”

“I do not…”

“Sometimes,” he replied, beaming tenderly at her in delight. “Now, eventually I’ll get to see if there is a floofy tail…”

“Oh goodness,” she blurted out, laughing loudly and pulling back from him, only to have him gather her closely against him, laughing with her. “There’s no floofy tail – I promise.”

“Then I guess I’ll need to come up with some other pet name for my beautiful bride…”

“Killian…”

“You can call me Sprinkles when we are alone,” he interrupted, still chuckling – causing her to laugh once more. “But only when we are alone together, okay? I’ve gotta keep some of this dangerous attitude for my friends or else they’ll know what a pushover I am for my wife.”

“And are you?”

“I might be…” he said tenderly, brushing back her hair from her face. “I never expected any of this, Destiny.”

“Me neither.”

“I’m not asking for anything other than moments like this between us – and this is why I wanted us to focus on friendship…”

“This is why I said ‘no kissing’…”

“Can we just agree to get rid of that rule?” he whispered. “Please?”

“You’re getting ready to leave for an unknown length of time, so what does it matter?”

“It will matter when I come back.”

“Then we’ll discuss it then – after we’ve had a chance to get to know each other,” she whispered sagely, feeling herself fight against the hope blossoming within her. She had such a tough life, such a bad run of luck in life, that it was hard to believe that someone so wonderful, so kind, could truly be a partner and a friend. “I’m scared and I want to believe, but need more time to accept that this is normal, that it’s okay.”

“Fair enough,” he began, his voice quiet in the stillness of the evening. “I know you are right, and I’ve always thrown myself in the direction I’ve felt was right, sometimes changing course quickly, thriving on instinct and gut reactions… but like I told you before? I believe this is worth waiting for and I’m trying, Destiny. I really am.”

She laid her hand on his cheek, meeting his dark gaze.

“I know you are – and it shows,” she breathed. “I’m trying to go with my instincts, doing what feels right, yet there is that little voice that keeps saying to ‘hang on a minute’. I’m the one who is terrified to let anyone in because the people that were supposed to protect and provide weren’t there for me, so it’s hard to just let a stranger in… but I have, you know? I’m letting you in as much as I can into my world, my home, and my life.”

“Then I’ll keep knocking on that imaginary wall every time I see it between us…” he smiled tenderly, before kissing her softly on the nose. “You’ll let me in eventually. I’m annoyingly irresistible – or so I’m told.”
