I was starting to think I didn’t want to be rescued.

Halen

Ren opened my office door and I entered. Ren shoved me out of the way as a blade came hurtling at my face. I looked up to see Ren had a gun aimed at my brother’s face. He looked furious.

“So you worked it out, did you?” I asked. “I never did think anything could get you to come down here.”

“I’d rather rot in hell but I do believe you have something of mine and I’m here to reclaim it.”

I put my hand on Ren’s shoulder to tell him it was okay to lower it. Zane may be good when I wasn’t looking but when I was on alert, he’d never get the best of me. Ren left the office and I moved around to the other end of my desk as Zane sat down in the visitor chair. I could see how uncomfortable he was.

He’d never been down here.

He’d never been at my mercy before.

“I don’t believe I do,” I told him. “Could you be a little more specific?”

“You know perfectly well that Paisley is mine.”

“Paisley is a human being,” I replied. “She doesn’t belong to anyone but herself, Zane. I also don’t see why you’re so upset. You are married, after all.”

“Don’t bring Hannah into this. Return Paisley to me and I’ll leave.”

“She’s here for a reason, Zane. A little birdie told me that you have plans to redevelop right over my home.”

His face changed. “How could you know anything about my business?”

“Like I said…a little birdie.”

Zane’s face changed from confusion to anger. “Go and get her now.”

“No, Zane. Firstly, she’s here for a reason and she knows she won’t be leaving until you back the fuck off. Secondly, she’s not your property. And finally, you don’t demand anything of me in my own home.”

If I weren’t so angry, I would be enjoying that he was losing his shit right before me and I was the reason for it.

“Bring her here and show me she is unharmed.”

“You know I wouldn’t harm her. I don’t have it in me to hurt a woman like you do,” I said. “Now, off you go, I want proof you have canned those plans. This is my side of the city.”

“Her mother misses her,” he said, trying a new tactic but I knew his tricks. “She’s been at me like a plague. Please…just send her home.”

There was no way I would allow him to double cross me and this was quite obviously a way to get around me having something on him. I grew up with him. I knew the monster hiding beneath that fake smile.

“I’ll have her call her mother tonight.”

Zane threw the chair across the room, it smashed against some of the books on my wall.

“I want to see her.”

“Fine, stay for dinner then,” I told him. “She’ll be there. Then you can see she’s fine and you can be on your merry way.”

Zane nodded and stormed out of the office, probably before he realized I would put him down if he destroyed any more of my stuff in front of me.

I didn’t really want him to see her, nor did I want her to think he had come to rescue her. My brain was telling me not to let her leave.

But I knew I had to…right? I wasn’t Zane. I didn’t force people into situations especially if they were innocent and she was definitely innocent of this feud between us.

Ren entered moments after Zane left with a quizzical expression before he sat down where Zane had just left. “I had her moved back to your bedroom for a few hours. She’s engrossed in a novel.”
