Rusty smiled a little. “I know. You’re tougher than me, that’s for sure.”

“We all have a strength that is unbreakable. There is no strongest and weakest person.”

I hugged Rusty. I’d never hugged him before but when he hugged me back, I felt better. He was like a little brother to me and I knew if things went bad, I’d never see him again but that was only further proof that he needed to go home and help Halen defend the underworld.

When Rusty pulled away, I could see he had watery eyes.

“What do I tell the boss?”

“Tell him I am here for a reason and I will funnel information to you. What’s your phone number?”

He recited it as I entered it into my phone. I sent him a text so he had my number.

“That’s from me. When I have information for Halen, I’ll send you a text and you tell him. Hopefully when it’s all over, I can message you and come back.”

Rusty nodded. “I will tell the boss.”

He hugged me again and I gratefully hugged him back. “Now get back before he notices how long you’re taking.”

“Oh, he’s here. He texted me before.”

“He’s up here?” I asked, my stomach fluttering with nerves. If he came here, there was no way I could convince Zane I didn’t want Halen. I was a fool for him and I knew it.

“He’s heading back down. I think the dinner with his brother and mother didn’t go well.”

“He still went?” I gasped. “Even after what I did?”

Rusty smirked at me. “He doesn’t like people to know he’s weakened. He always goes, but he’s never in a good mood afterward.”

Oh god. Now Zane will know I didn’t poison and kill him. I’d be under even more scrutiny.

“Text me when you find out if anything happened.”

Rusty nodded and walked out, and I closed the door, allowing my breathing to return to normal. Halen was up here.

He was close and I had to steer clear or else I’ll betray my original plan and run back into his arms like the little girl everyone imagined I was.

Halen

The second I got back to my bedroom, I started to pace. My mind was a mess, with what I’d figured out. Percy hadn’t been answering his phone and I feared for his safety but I had to have faith in his ability to talk himself out of any situation.

My entire family were fucking animals.

Except for me and Percy, of course. I threw my fist into the wall, plaster exploding around me and landing on the floor. I saw my knuckles were bleeding and were sore but I didn’t care.

I moved away from the wall, and paced again. How could I not have seen it? My own fucking family. I put my hands on my desk and tried to breathe properly but it was only coming in short rasps. I shoved my hands across the desk, pushing everything off my desk onto the floor with a crash. The loud sound made me feel a tiny morsel of relief for a brief moment.

I didn’t even know where to go from here. I didn’t know how to fix this issue, or who to attack. My father was too powerful, he always had been, how could I get to him?

My door opened and I turned quickly to see Ren coming through the door.

“What is it?” I demanded.

“Boss, you good?”

“Why aren’t you in the club?” I hissed at him.

“I saw you come through like a missile, I’m just checking everything is all good.”
