Page 9 of The Demon in Him

San Francisco, I wanted to go to San Francisco.

Then I had strolled into that damn office and saw Jacob, and all that had been pushed from my mind as effectively as sweeping my arm across my desk and knocking everything to the floor.

Which, if his father hadn’t been there, is exactly what I would have done and taken Jacob on the desk right there. The way his eyes blazed when he saw me told me he would have not only let me do it, but would have thrown himself at me with equal vigor. He had a casual stance, leaning against the desk with his arms folded over his chest, not as built or as tall as Frank or me but could hold his own. Something about him looked out of place in his white office shirt tucked so neatly into his gray pants. His shoes were too scuffed, like he worked somewhere he could get dirty, and the uneven tan lines around his wrists and neck told me he was outside as much as he was in.

Yeah, I got a good look at him.

I wondered what he did in his free time, but I wasn’t there to ask about his life. I was there for business, always for business, which I reminded myself of constantly during the meeting when his eyes kept meeting mine. We both knew neither of us was concentrating on the plans and designs on the desk between us.

Pure fucking chemistry.

Frank would tell me to go for it, to take Jacob out and fuck him senseless.

But would I corrupt him the same way I had Tate?

Surely, I could have one night with him, and he would be safe from me.

Just one night.

Another suit, evening wear, black on black.

I slid into the driver’s seat of my car after getting out to open the door for Jacob. He eyed me with a smirk, somewhere between suspicion and amusement, as I did and chuckled lightly when I lightly slapped his hand out of the way and buckled his seat belt for him. Despite all the parts of myself I denied, demons were not submissive, and even if this were only for one night, I needed it to be abundantly clear who was in charge.

Jacob didn’t seem to mind.

The restaurant was expensive, several blocks from the proposed site of the new apartment building I had discussed with Jacob’s father only hours before. Neither of us mentioned it. Jacob had already professed his disinterest in his father’s work, and I was far from focused on that tonight. The idea of being close to him had stirred something in me and offered a reminder as to why I don’t indulge in this side more often. Even the smallest hint of sex had my demon riling up, preparing to take over, to let loose and dominate. And Jacob smelled amazing beyond the subtle, spicy cologne covering the scent of his skin. If I concentrated, I could almost hear his blood pulsing through his veins. His heart was pumping faster than normal, and I’m certain it’s because his mind was in the same place as mine.

Back at my place, on the bed, sweaty and naked, him at my mercy.

I wondered if I still had those silk ties around because I could picture Jacob’s lithe figure on the bed underneath me, the ties straining as he pulled against them, gyrating and grinding against the air, desperate for friction.

Fuck.

Concentrate.

One did not gain control of their demon for over a decade by letting it take back that control every time sex was on the mind.

The valet caught my car keys as I tossed them underhand over my car, and he slid sleekly into my front seat as if he owned the vehicle. Little was said, they were too professional for that, and I preferred it that way. Placing my palm on the small of Jacob’s back, he smirked again in that bemused way but didn’t stop me, only speaking once we were seated and the waiter had disappeared after taking my wine order.

“You like to be in control, don’t you?” Jacob asked. The question was paired with a sweep of his hand through his hair, a motion that appeared casual, but coupled with the darting of his eyes around the room, it displayed his nervousness. He wasn’t used to places like this, and internally I cursed myself for picking such a high-end restaurant. Jacob was more casual, and I’m certain he would have been happy if we’d gotten drive-through burgers and sat in the car in the parking lot, laughing between bites.

My lips lifted into a smirk of my own.Did I like being in control?“You have no idea,” I rumbled, holding his eye contact long enough for Jacob to be certain there was something to be heard between the lines.

His chuckle ended, and he licked his lips, opening his mouth to reply and stopping when the waiter returned and poured our drinks, leaving the bottle on the table as indicated.

“Aren’t you going to take a taste and say…” Jacob smacked his lips obscenely, drawing a glance from the couple at the table next to us and making me grin, “…hmm , yes, rather good. This will do, I suppose, Jeeves.”

“Nice of you to learn the waiter’s name so quickly.”

“You’rekidding.”

Chuckling, I nodded. “Of course I am.”

Jacob laughed. “Payback for me mocking you, I suppose.”

My smile was dangerous. “Absolutely.” There was a moment of silence as we both took a drink, perusing the menu. “So tell me, Jacob, if you don’t want to work for the council or the mayor, what do you want to do?”

“I’m an accountant.”
