“Oh I enjoy the thought of you thriving here, Lanas. You’re the Lioness’ mate. Never would I have thought that my son would be a part of the leadership of Orestes. It’s enough for me to know that my descendants are going to have a part to play in ruling this world, because this is where the lions began. This is our sacred home. I will watch you from the Great Plains and I will always be smiling. You are going to have a better life here than I could have given you. It's funny really, when I fell pregnant with you I felt guilty about bringing you into the world because I wasn’t sure if it was going to get any better for you. But then you have helped to make the world a better place for all lions that are going to follow us. Be good my son. I will always love you.”
“I’m never going to forget you Mom,” I said, choking on my sorrow.
“Let us sit here a while,” she said.
So we did. We sat and watched the sunrise over Orestes and then she took her last breath. Her head slumped against my shoulder and tears fell on my cheeks. I sniffed and did not wish to move, even though it wasn’t going to change anything. Then, two shadows stretched across the ground as Mika and Ava appeared.
“Is she gone?” Ava asked gently.
I nodded. She came to sit beside me. Mika sat beside her. She put her arm around me and comforted me.
“She will never be forgotten,” Ava said. “None of them will. What we do in the future we do for them and all the others who suffered without seeing the reward of Orestes.”
She spoke with conviction and I knew she was going to remain true to her word. I took a deep breath to compose myself and then watched over this new world, and looked to the future.
