“She’s lyin’, but we’ll get it out of her eventually.”

“Is it something with Cayman?” I asked, barely above a whisper.

My question appeared to snap her out of whatever she was lost in thought over. “Not at all. Everything is fine with Cayman. In fact, they’re in the air on their way to Sharm el-Sheikh as we speak.”

“I can’t help but worry about him,” I muttered, wishing I hadn’t.

“Come over here,” said Wren, leading me to a sofa, where I sat beside her. “I know it’s hard to imagine Cayman as much beyond your childhood friend.”

Actually, I was imagining him in ways I never had before, but I kept it to myself.

“The simple truth is, he’s a badass. Am I right, Delfino?”

“Absolutely,” Kima said from my other side.

“I’m not sure if he told you, but he’s being considered for the position of assistant chief. Of course, he can’t move into it until the UN releases him.”

“He didn’t mention it.”

“He wouldn’t, though, would he, Delfino?”

“Definitely not. The man is as humble as he is capable.” Her eyes met mine. “Know this, to be in the position he’s in now requires a level of skill comparable to the best MI6 agents in the world. Z and Nemesis never would’ve made him the mission lead if he weren’t. Oh, and by the way, Delfino is my code name.”

“Thank you for telling me about Cayman. Sometimes, it’s hard for me to remember him as anything other than my childhood friend. Also, thank you for clarifying about your code name. Keeping up is hard.”

“You’ll get used to it. We pretty much just use the code names. Like nicknames,” said Wren. “My given name is Kennedy, and I don’t even answer to it anymore. Not many people have called me anything besides Wren, at least not since my mama died.”

“I’m so sorry for your loss.”

She nodded. “Thanks. She’s been gone a long time now. I was just a kid when she passed.”

I wanted to ask how she’d died and exactly how old Wren was when it happened, but like with her being pregnant, it wasn’t any of my business.

“So, shall we get started? I bet you know a helluva lot more than you think you do.”

“Meaning?”

“My dad is from the UK, but my brother and I were raised in the States. That’s what I learned, as far as law and history. You, on the other hand, were raised here. Some of what is on the test, you would’ve been taught in primary school.”

“I wasn’t the best student.”

“Neither was I, darlin’. Most of the time, I let my mind drift when I thought whatever they were tryin’ to teach me wasn’t worth learnin’.”

I laughed. Wren was just so real.

“Anyway, I turned out okay. You will too.”

Something told me she was way beyond okay.

“Let’s see now. I’m sure Z has a copy of the test.” She opened her laptop.

“Wouldn’t that be cheating?” Not to mention, wouldn’t she get in trouble for accessing the MI6 chief’s files?”

“Don’t worry,” said Kima, patting my hand. “The test is given to the applicants ahead of time. We’re just circumventing the standard procedure.”

“By hacking into the chief’s files.”

Wren turned to me. “Don’t worry,” she said like Kima had. “I have access to the majority of his stuff. Honestly, my security clearance is higher than his.”
