“It happens in the movies all the time,” said Wren.

“Clearly, you’ve never been on a horse,” Hanadarko shot back.

Wren raised a brow. “My family has owned King-Alexander Ranch in Texas for generations. I wasbornon a horse.”

“And I bet you never tried to kiss someone while riding one.”

“Well, no, actually.”

Kima cleared her throat.

“Sorry, go on, Bexli.”

“That’s the end of the story. He didn’t kiss me; he shouted at me like I was a bloody idiot…” Tears fell, and I couldn’t go on. Every fear I’d had about Cayman not wanting me anymore once I gave in and we became more than friends came true in a matter of minutes this morning. “It was like he couldn’t stand the sight of me.”

Kima cocked her head. “Perhaps he was angry because he was worried.”

“Cayman and I have never argued. Certainly not like that. It was h-horrible.” I dissolved into tears again and couldn’t go on. I felt like I’d shown him my heart, and all he’d done was stomp on it. “Now, I have nothing. No home. No job. No Cayman. Nothing to offer him or anyone else. I have no life.”

“Hold on a minute.” Hanadarko got up and walked over, squeezing between Kima and me. “Scoot over, dammit,” she said to her.

Kima laughed, stood, and took the other empty seat.

“You have all of those things. You and Cayman had a fight. Not to one-up you, but the fights Mayhem and I have had were a helluva lot worse.” She laughed. “Anyway, you have a home. You have a job, or you will. I even predict you’ll have Cayman. Not until you decide to forgive him, not the other way around.”

Wren and Kima nodded. “She’s right.”

I wiped my tears. “What do I do?”

“We get busy. First, you study for the test. When you need a break, we’ll work on the more physical stuff. You need to get your strength up, darlin’, so you have to stop pickin’ at your food. We’ll teach you to fight, shoot. Hell, we’ll teach you to ride those damn horses better than Cayman ever did.”

The three of us looked at Wren with wide eyes.

“But then, what are we gonna do tomorrow?” Hanadarko said before she burst out laughing.

“I’ll tell you what we’re going to do today, tomorrow, and for the rest of the days following. Bexli is going to be thebadassiestone of us.”

“You up for it, girl?” asked Hanadarko.

“I don’t have anything else to do.”

She messed my hair. “By the way, we gotta do something aboutthat.”

“What do you have in mind?” asked Wren.

“I don’t know, stylin’ it or somethin’.”

“That’s my department,” said Kima. “After the two of them work you into the ground, I’ll pamper you.”

“Wait a minute. I want to be pampered,” said Wren.

“Me too,” added Hanadarko.

Kima rolled her eyes. “We’ll have a girls night and pamper all four of us. Sound good?”

Millie, who I hadn’t realized was asleep near the door, jumped up, tail wagging.

“Miss Milagro wants in too,” said Hanadarko, patting her lap. The dog rushed over, jumped up on the sofa, and spread out over both our laps. I put my arms around her neck and rested my head against hers.
