“You will never see her again,Mithras.”

He shrugged a shoulder. “I was tired of her dry pussy and foul breath. She was a lousy fuck anyway.”

“Release Nonna, and we’ll consider letting you live.”

He smiled and shook his head. “You are a terrible negotiator, Winston Trace.” He spat my name more than said it. “You have nothing I desire, yet I have something you want very badly. Two things, in fact. As we speak, Bexli is being transported back to Malta. It was careless of you to leave her in a place where it would be so easy for us to get to her.”

“We both know you’re bluffing, Mithras. Bexli is perfectly safe. As I said, you’ll never see her again. As far as me not having anything you desire, I wonder if your own life means so little to you. From what I can see, you’re outnumbered five to two, and I doubt very much Nonna Vella is on your side.” My eyes met hers, and in them, I saw no fear but tremendous heat.

“Neither of us is foolish enough to believe we represent the entirety of our parties.”

“No? Are you saying you havebodyguard-typeswith you, Moretti?” With my utterance of the agreed-upon words, I heard thepewof six guns coming from different directions. While we couldn’t hear them all, the two or three thuds of guards hitting the ground echoed in the open space. Mithras had to know exactly what had just happened.

“By my count, we now stand at twenty-five to one. Twenty-six with Nonna.” With each word, I took another step closer.

“You are crazy to think I won’t kill the old bat.”

“If you are stupid enough to shoot her, it will be the last thing you do. There will be a bullet in your brain before she hits the ground.”

“So cavalier with the life of another. You surprise me. Perhaps we are more alike than I thought. Until now, the only thing I thought we shared was a whore.”

“The second best day of my life will be when I watch you die, Moretti. Instead of shooting you in the head, I’ll aim for the kneecaps. Better yet, a direct shot right between your legs.” I lowered my gun, aiming at his midsection.

Just as I took another step, a shot rang out and Mithras fell to the ground. I raced forward and kicked the gun he’d dropped farther from his body. Ares covered me as I knelt down to check for a pulse.

“He’s dead. The bullet hit him square in the back of the head,” said Ares.

“It came from in there,” said Nem, pointing at the villa. “The shot was fired from the lower-level kitchen window.”

“Who in the fucking hell shot him?” I shouted as Z untied Francesca Vella.

“It wasn’t one of our guys,” said Ares, holding his mobile so I could see the screen. A red dot was moving inside the structure, but not on the main floor. It was going lower.

“Everyone on our team can see this, Cayman. We’ll get whoever it was,” said Ares, running in the direction of the villa.

I looked between Nem and Z. “I need a moment.”

“Take it,” Nem responded.

I took a couple of steps away.

“Cay?” said Bex when she answered my call on the first ring.

“Hello, my love.”

“Are you all right?”

“I am now. It’s good to hear your voice.”

“Yours too. What’s happened?”

“Moretti is dead.”

“Dead?” she gasped.

“Yes. He is dead, and you are safe.”

Bexli’s voice shook. “What about Nonna?”
